Edwards Campaign Responds to Coulter Calling Him 'Faggot'

-snip-

But David Bonior, the former congressman and now Edwards campaign manager, responded in an email to supporters, "This is just a taste of the filth that the right-wing machine is gearing up to throw at us. And now that it's begun, we have a choice: Do we sit back, or do we fight back?

"I say we fight. Help us raise $100,000 in 'Coulter Cash' this week to show every would-be Republican mouthpiece that their bigoted attacks will not intimidate this campaign. I just threw in 100 bucks. Will you join me?

"Coulter's attack was no accident. It happened on national television at one of the year's biggest conservative conferences....If we can raise $100,000 in 'Coulter Cash' this week, we can show that bigotry will only backfire on those who use it."

8. Those were my thought as well, but ...
... this gives the Dems an opportunity to turn some attention on the fact that conservative thugs choose to feauture Annthrax at their podium.

2. Uh, isn't it bigotry to be offended by someone calling you a
faggot?

What's wrong with it?

We need to erase the stigma that makes this an insult.

4. You might want to rethink that remark.
I'm no expert on the linguistic subculture of the gay community, but that may well be an "n" word equivalent, unless you are speaking of British meatballs.

The fact remains, she did not intend it as a compliment. It was hurled as invective, and it was a word chosen for the dramatic effect she sought and received.

6. Oh - I know she didn't intend it as a compliment.
My point is that if we acted as though she meant nothing, she really would mean nothing - at some point.

She's inconsequential and I wish we'd stop talking about her, myself.

7. Again, and not meaning to be argumentative, if the word is the
equivalent of the N word, I question whether that approach would go over very well unless the speaker had established bona fides within the gay community.

This is one of those situations where the community involved has more weight in determining offense. Those who aren't part of the community can put their two cents in, but they don't play a role in setting the standards, and they may unknowingly or unintentionally cause offense without intending to so do.

It's sort of like those standard comedy bits we see in movies, where the pastyfaced dorkish white guy, trying to fit in amongst the Black community, comes on screen emulating a rap/hip hop icon and says something approximating "How're my knickers doin'?" ... whereupon he is set upon by the offended bystanders, or pulled aside and counselled, is made to look the fool, or what have you.

It's a "You can't use it if you aren't in the club" sort of word. At least, that's how I see it. YMMV.

Actually, I hope we continue to talk about her, and ask the likes of Romney, Cheney, McCain, and every other craphead that turned up at that conference if they ENDORSE her remarks, and if they don't, WHEN, pray tell, will they plainly REPUDIATE them?

All ya gotta do is frame those bums and Annie in the same shot, over and over again. It's like Swiftboating, only using the simple TRUTH instead of a pack of lies.

3. This deserves a large KICK and R. E and P is SHAMING the MSM into covering this story

Audience members appeared startled, then many clapped, and she opened the floor to questions. The event was carried on C-SPAN. Many newspapers covered the event but failed to mention the Coulter slur.

Tell it like it is...she'll live to regret her remarks. Funny how the article also points out that she's apparently hyper about gay people, and thinks EVERYONE (In recent years she has suggested that Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton and Al Gore have or may have homosexual tendencies.) is gay. Where's that coming from, one wonders?

There are some wonderful snippets in the piece, too--looks like even the meanass tighty righties are getting sick of her schtick, and the spokespeople for two GOP candidates are ducking and/or playing dumb:

Ed Morrissey on his Captain's Quarters blog wrote: "Yeah, that's just what CPAC needs -- an association with homophobia. Nice work, Ann."

.... Hot Air site regular contributor "Bryan" wrote: "I’m no fan of John Edwards, but that’s just a stupid joke. It’s over the line. The laughter it generated across the room was more than a little annoying. Last year it was 'raghead.' This year it’s calling John Edwards a 'faggot.' Two years in a row, Coulter has finished up an otherwise sharp CPAC routine with an obnoxious slur that liberals will fling at conservatives for years to come. Thanks, Ann."

"A Giuliani spokeswoman said she had not heard the speech, and a Romney spokesman did not return calls late Friday."

When a questioner asked Coulter why she praises marriage but broke off so many engagements, she responded by calling the questioner ugly."
