Bush and the Repubs are searching desperately for a divisive issue...
Because, only by division, can they retain any legitimacy from the people. It's a sad state of affairs when politicians search for ways to divide, rather than unite. Unfortunately for them, they have used up almost every issue that could divide the people. Their last hope is the war in Iraq. They will wrap themselves tightly in the American flag. Patriotism is, indeed, the last refuge of a scoundrel.

1. Perhaps, finally, people are catching on to the Republican strategy.
Gay Marriage, Flag Burning, Immigration, and the WOT just don't have the same emotional appeal they once had. It's not that we are moving in their direction...it's that their base is starting to see how these issues have been used to give Republics power to enact legislation that hurts the country as a whole. Bush has managed to trash every principle that the Republic Party used to stand for...State's Rights, privacy, fiscal responsibility, smaller government, nation building...you name it, he's totally done the opposite. Bush has sucked the life out of the Party...couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch of criminals.

2. "Bush has sucked the life out of the Party..."
I think there is a lot of truth in what you say.

4. Bush didn't do it by himself
The Republic Party went along with him every step of the way.
