WASHINGTON, Dec. 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Outgoing Massachusetts Republican Governor and presidential hopeful Mitt Romney sealed the deal today on his hypocritical efforts to use the immigration debate to pander to extremists in his political party. Despite his own use of a company that relies on undocumented workers to maintain his lawn, Romney signed a controversial agreement with federal officials to allow Massachusetts state police to arrest people for violating federal immigration laws.

Romney used the waning days of his administration to sign the heavily criticized deal, even though the co-chairman of Romney's own Advisory Committee on Immigrants and Refugees said it would overburden police officers and undermine their relationships with members of the community. (Boston Globe, 6/22/06) The deal is Romney's latest hypocritical attempt to pander to extremists in his party as he positions himself for a White House run. Despite the fact that Romney has traveled the country talking tough on immigration reform, recent media reports revealed Romney's own use of a landscaping company that relies heavily on undocumented workers to maintain the lawn at his Belmont estate for most of the last decade.
