Edited on Mon Dec-04-06 12:34 AM by Dinger
Mine is obvious. I didn't want to do a poll, because I know we have more than 10 awesome Dems who would be great!
No explanations necessary, just your choice, if you have one this early, which is fine.

155. Ditto--Gore/Clark
If President Gore runs I'll happily support him.
If he opts not to I'll happily support General Clark.

I think they're the two the Pukes are most afraid of, for good reason.

112. I like the sound of that. I'm not an expert on Obama but what I have...
...seen and read has seemed pretty positive. I like the way he (Obama) speaks and articulates his thoughts as well as his focus on equality and minority issues. Though I'd not be voting for him because he's black, it is a nice side-perk like Lieberman being Jewish or Geraldine Ferarro being a woman. Again, I didn't support any of them specifically because of their "minority" status but I did like the diversity it potentially brought to the position.

But if both Gore and Obama run, Obama will win. That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing: I think Obama can easily win the general election as well. I also think he would make a great president.

32. I just don't want to see a Clinton or a Bush as president ....it's 'bad' for democracy
If Hillary were to win the Dem nomination (and subsiquently the Presidency) that would mean that a Bush or a Clinton were a president for what....24 years????

George H.W. Bush ~ 4 years (1 term)
William Clinton ~ 8 years (2 terms)
George W. Bush ~ 8 years (2 terms)
-------------------------------------------
Bush/Clintons 20 years (5 terms)

Hillary for 4-8 years (1-2 terms)
-------------------------------------

24-28 years with either a Bush or a "brother" Clinton at the Executive helm....we all have experienced "how well" that has worked out!!!!

I'm Democratic "rank & file"....and she's not the 'right person' for our nominee....or, MOST IMPORTANTLY, ....she's not the best person for our country.

Peace,

33. Why would a Hillary Presidency be "bad for Democracy"?
If she was voted in fair and square...wouldn't that be democracy in action?

I have to agree I don't want to see anymore Bush's in there :-)

On your last point I disagree wholeheartedly on both points...not only do I believe she would be our strongest nominee, but also that she would be an outstanding President!

38. I see...
Two fairly elected PResidents (Bush I, Clinton) and one unfairly elected on (Bush II)...

A see one very popular, effective President (Clinton), and two ineffective...one dangerous... Presidents (Bush I and II)...

I would have no problem fairly electing another highly successful President...I don't give a hoot whether her name is Clinton or not!

As to your last point...our country was revived under Clinton...rescued by him from the 12 years of Reagan/Bush rule, and screwed up again by Bush II...

8 years of Bush's have been a disaster...8 years of Clinton a success...I wouldn't mind having 8 more of the latter.

75. Ahh the tried and true "I don't know anyone who supports Hillary...
So she has no chance" line of argument...

How about this...I live in the most populace county of a very Red state. I interact with Democrats here on a weekly basis...support for Hillary here is quite high...with at least one officer of the Democratic Committee openly supporting her!

I guess my anecdote is just as valid as yours...not to mention the polls that consistently show her to be both well liked by Democrats, and the top choice of a plurality of them...

101. Ok, whatever
I'm in a blue state and am active politically statewide. Everyone I interact with believes her to be too polarizing. Plus many are none too pleased with her performance as a Senator.

Don't worry though. Contrary to popular DU opinion, when I toss Clark's name out I never hear of any support there either but mostly a lack of name recognition, not the negatives I hear on Hillary.

I look forward to the state convention in Feb. Will be able to get a very broad view of opinions now that midterms are over and the WH race will be more in focus. At least a bit.

120. One summer day
...a man came into our gallery. Long story short, the conversation came around to politics, a subject I avoid when selling art. Anyway, it turned out that the man was visiting Maine from Hawaii where he was a political fundraiser for unions and Democrats. He asked me if I had ever met anyone who supported Hillary, and said that he hadn't met one. Hawaii. And that is his job...Democratic fundraising.

Amazing.

I didn't pressure him to see what names he was hearing. We did discuss Iraq. Then he asked how I stayed informed considering my remote location. He was amazed to actually meet one of those crazy bloggers who turned out to be normal.

175. One autumn day...
A Fedex driver came into my store...heavy southern accent, menacingly asking who had the Hillary Clinton sticker on their car...

I finally fessed up it was mine (I was a bit bigger than him so figured I would put up a good fight)...the guy walks up to me, shakes my hand, and tells me he loves Hillary Clinton and can hardly wait to vote for her.!!!

On Winter day, I am driving along Hwy 66 here in northern Virginia...the guy behind me starts tailing me like he wants to catch up to me...flashing his lights at me to switch lanes...pissed, but not wanting to get in an accident I finally do it...I figure he is ticked at my "Get Over it You Lost" bumpersticker with the Confederate flag crossed out (Here in Virginia that is a good bet)...they pull up beside me and start yelling at the top of their lungs...and I see in their hands they are holding up Hillary '08 bumperstickers..

This summer... a women in a local, but very prominent womens Democratic Club mentioned that she heard I was supporting Hillary Clinton...I figured I was in for a tongue lashing because I had chosen her over Governor Warner (who I really respect), and who had not yet dropped out of the race. She confided in me however, that she was supporting Hillary too...

I could go on and on...many with folks who see my stickers, or my acquaintances at Party functions...or any other of a number of places...

... but SaveElmer has the right to express his preference without an anti-Hillary response. I mean, you are free to post your dislike of Hillary all you want, but it seems that there are more appropriate threads to discuss your dislike of her than in response to SE's post. I'm sure he's heard all the anti-Hillary arguments before, and if he agreed, he wouldn't still support her. He has a right to his choice and opinion just as we all do. Peace.

34. Agreed..... but if you look at how the thread "pans out"......it was almost
'pregnant' waiting for someone to bring up Hillary. In my first response I almost wrote "first one to bring up Hillary has the cooties' <-----that's not EXACTLY what I thought, but it's a public board afterall....)

Hillary can be very effective as the Senator that she is.....I don't believe that it would benefit anyone to test the "Peter Principle".

142. I'll disagree here,

Obama knows, as one DU poster said, that any multitude of things could happen between now and 2012 or even 2018 that could nip his Presidential aspirations in the rear end. To line himself up as a Vice Presidential candidate would be the best way to secure some stability that could lead to a Presidential candidacy(which is generally handed to the VP's in the primary, barring them being total crap).

I think he'd go for it. But then again John Kerry got the nomination which left everyone in the nation going, " Who the fuck is he? " so who knows what the hell is going to happen.

148. Yeah, totally.
I thought the John Kerry thing was downright creepy, (we were all crazy about Dean in these parts) but I saw his base when I talked to older Dems like my parents, informed less from blogs and more from TV. I think that crew is shrinking though, as the blogosphere grows and gains credibility. Nevertheless, Obama has president written all over him, more than Gore, Cheney, Bush I, Quayle, or any VP I can ever remember. He's a show stopper, and he would steal the limelight from many candidates. If he were put with Hillary for instance, her achievement as first woman prez would be undermined by him being first black VP...

Edwards or Obama- though their lack of experience makes me wonder. However, I don't see Clinton, Kerry, Biden as an option. I'm neutral on Vilsack and Bayh. Have to see what they say on the campaign trail. General Clark I like but I tend to think he wouldn't be good in politics simply because he doesn't know the "political games" required. If anything thats a compliment to him. Gore has not said anything so I do not factor his candidacy in.

48. none at this time - to early to be betting on horses
There are alot of horses prancing around the corral. Some look better than others - but the preliminary race is still a year or so away.

Think back to 2002 - who were the "front runners" then compared to those at the beginning of 2004. back in 2002 - Edwards, Kerry, Dean and Clark were hardly at the top of the "best bets" list.

Much can happen between 2006 and the run-up to the 2008 primaries. There are a few out there that I do like, but I'm not putting down any money yet.

However - I will go this far and tell you to look for a dark horse candidate to emerge by late 2007.

55. At the moment, and this can change and most certainly will
1. Gore:
Why he's #1:
Experience, experience, experience combined with the passion to do the right thing. Early Iraq war opponent. "An Inconvenient Truth" reintroduced him to the public. Private sector experience.
What would change my mind:
Obviously if he doesn't choose to run or if he runs and reverts to the overly cautious, clumsy 2000 Al Gore. I would also lose enthusiasm if he hasn't tempered his views on Free Trade.

2. Obama:
Why:
Charisma, early war opponent, historic opportunity for an African-American to run. National unity message resonates in wake of the age of Bush.
Why not:
He's #2 because of lack of experience.
What would change my mind:
So far he's done everything right but there's a long road ahead. I absolutely love him as a running mate for Gore.

3. Clark:
Why:
Military, foreign policy and administrative experience and an early warning voice against the Iraq war.
Why not:
His 2004 run did not inspire a great deal of confidence.
What would change my mind:
Strong debate performances, ability to craft a cohesive message.

4. Richardson:
Why: Foreign policy and domestic experience as governor of a western state and of course his Hispanic heritage.
Why not:
I don't know much about him or his stand on the issues--I may like the idea of him rather more than him personally. Then there was that little baseball resume padding issue--that would stick.
What would change my mind:
Some strong debate performance and clear headed policy statements.

5. Edwards
Why: Economic populist, great speaker, charismatic and I love Elizabeth.
Why not: Inexperience plus, unfortunately for him (but no doubt fortunately for his wife) he looks far younger than his years. Voted for the IWR.
What would change my mind:
Maybe a little grey in the hair, John--just kidding.

7. Kerry
Why:
Experience, knows how NOT to run for president, intelligent and thoughtful. Has done a 180 on the war and is now a leading opponent.
Why Not:
Sadly Big John has shown some truly stunning political gaffes lately. The botched joke was a dumb screw up but he failed to clear up the mess adequately.
What would change my mind:
My other candidates implode--which is not beyond the realm of possibility.

Finally:
Not running but I wish he would:

Schweitzer
Why:
He's a cool guy and his dog Jaq is even cooler. Seriously, he's a blunt spoken, economic populist, charismatic western Governor who knows the Middle East intimately and knows energy policy.
Why not.
Inexperience. How would he hold up under the media scrutiny may be a question.
What would change my mind:
He'd have to run, of course and there's no indication he's planning to do so. If he chose to run a few sparkling performances on the Sunday Talk shows would give me lots of confidence.

74. Gore/Clark or Gore/Obama
If he decides to run I want Gore. Passionate, intelligent, experienced, denied in 2000. He was right on so many things: the environment, the Iraq war. He was one of the first to speak out on Bush's incompetance. He is unafraid and I doubt that would change if he ran. He is followed by Clark (intelligent, military experience). I also like Obama's personality and charisma but am afraid of his lack of experience in foreign affairs. We need someone who has been there dealing with other countries and has that experience especially with the world so unstable right now. Being VP for four or eight years would give him that experience. That would lead me to Kerry. He has experience being in the Senate so long and has run for president already. I think Kerry's problem is he makes political gaffes and people worry how that would play if he were president. Edwards to me would make another good VP, needs more experience. Not too hot on Bayh, Vilsack, Richardson. Nothing about their personalities, experience stands out. Richardson makes a good gov but has some scandals in his past. Hillary is my dead last pick as she seems so power hungry about becoming president. I want someone who wants to be there to make changes in the country, not someone who wants to be president just for the sake of being president. We already have that with Chimpy. Still, everyone's entitled to their opinion.:)

90. Obama/Clark
I think Obama/Clark is a winnable ticket. Whatever inexperience Obama has on military matters, Clark will overshadow with his obvious experience.

This ticket, while extremely liberal, can also be effectively positioned as a centrist ticket in '08. Also, they can run as the "outsider" ticket, something quite a few on here seem to be overlooking when discussing Obama's lack of experience. Remember, this is the ONLY year Obama can run, and I'm not even sure he can win it now: SENATORS DON'T WIN THE PRESIDENCY. I don't know why people ignore history so often. If Hillary runs, she will lose. Gore is also extraordinarily polarizing, especially now considering his focus on global warming (although he would make an awesome Sec of the Interior). Edwards is a gimp.

That's right now, though. Things will change drastically over the next year. The only exception to the Senator rule, in my opinion, could be Bayh. Don't sleep on Bayh and Vilsack, they were both very successful governors in red states.

These are just my opinions, obviously.

103. I used to say...
...Gore/Obama, but I have my doubts that Gore is actually running. It's kinda odd how he can have such a huge following on this board, and hasn't even hinted that he wants to run at all.

I say a variation of Edwards and Obama. But in all likelihood, it'll probably be Clinton/Obama...mark my words. There's no way in hell she gives up easily, and her money alone will take her farther than most, even if she isn't doing well. Obama probably has a 70% chance of running right now, and if he does, unless someone makes him look like a complete fool...odds are he'll get lots of investments and support and he'll be hard to knock down once he gets on a roll. The media wants to have a showdown between the two, but I honestly see it happening where Obama mysteriously drops out close to the end, and Clinton announces that he's her VP selection.

but I don't have a problem with several others. I just like Bayh's common sense approach to the problems facing our country.

Of all the candidates Bayh has the most experience. He was a 2 term governor and is in the 2nd term as a Senator.

He serves on the Armed Services Com. and the Intelligence Com..

I know he and Clinton are up to be subcommittee chairs but not sure were.

After Bayh I like Edwards and Clark. I''d love to see Obama out there but he needs more experience in Foreign Relations. He'll get there. Although there is part of me that would love to see Obama on the ticket as Veep I just would prefer a someone with Foreign Relations or National Security experience.

I don't think Gore is going to run. I know don't throw rocks. I love the guy but would rather seem him as a Secretary of Energy or Environmental issues.

180. He's going to have to explain why he voted for the war
Also...has he come out and apologized for doing so? I don't like the fact that he's DLC (he was chairman of the group for a few years to boot) but he's the best out of DLC-affiliated candidates (that includes Biden, Hillary, and Vilsack) in terms of resume and public speaking. He would also help us in down-ballot Congressional races.

he has explained it on several occasions. Basically stating that he would not have voted for it had he known some of what now has been made public. He made that case some time ago. He has been highly critical of Bush's handling of the war long before it was popular to do so and called for Rumsfeld's resignation well over 2 years ago. Bayh as well as Clinton are members of the Armed Services Committee and my gut sense is that these members will not be apologising publically because of how it may affect our troops. I'm certain they would not do anything to undercut our troops morale while in Iraq. Having family members serving in Iraq I very much appreciate all the Dem. members of that committee. They have fought hard to get the best for our troops in an unwelcoming political climate. I'm grateful that Bayh secured more armored humvees for the troops. That doesn't mean apologies won't happen in the future.

http://armed-services.senate.gov/members.htm

I believe over time Bayh will address the Bankruptcy issue. I believe the problem had to do with preditory credit card lending practices and youthful indescretions of running those cards up well into the 3-7000. range. I agreed with Bayh that some personal spending restraint and responsiblity for one's debt needs to be addressed but also agreed that an amendment protecting smaller amounts be allowed. That amendment was not passed. Perhaps it will come up again in the new Dem. majority and we will see the amendment on the floor again and hopefully passed. I hope, like you Senator Bayh will address this issue as it has come up time and time again.

I'm a Kerry partisan overall the best IMHO. I like Gore has a lot of extra cache adn it's hard to see him losing again. Clark is brilliant and has proven his character as a Democrat over the last 2 campaign cycles. I need to get more familiar with Obama before reasonably thinking about him. All the rest would be bunched up far behind for me.

(I dont count Feigold and Warner who have taken themselves out of the running)

154. Undecided but:, Edwards, Biden, Dodd, Bayh, In that order.
#Edwards - Populist with a stirring speaking style and and ability to reach people.

#2Biden - Articulate, can think on his feet, experienced, also charismatic. He scares me the way he can be a loose cannon, though.

#3Dodd - An articulate speaker, quick on the uptake, and the only candidate running who actually "looks presidential."

#4Bayh - Mild mannered, brings a red state, finacially well backed campaign, a good general election candidate, experienced, and I think he can peel away new democrats from Hillary - so I'm hoping he'll help kill her campaign during the primary.

Other candidates I like: Gore, Kerry, and Clark - I really like them all but don't think they are good candidates. Gore and Kerry are politically dammaged (though Kerry has the added problem of having run a crappy presidential campaign and an unfortunate biography in terms of reaching the little guy.)

Clark - I like him but he is too thoughtful and long winded to actually be a good politician - he's not a sound bite kind of candidate. If his political acumen improves I'm open to supporting his candidacy. The run will tell.

Obama - inexperienced and he doesn't enthrall me with charisma like Edwards did on the last go round. Obama is more a black Evan Bayh without a state or the experience - articulate and attractive but not charismatic, in my opinion.

Vilsack's boring.

Hillary is looking old and her rallying campaign style grates on my nerves, and I just voted for her. She doesn't have the charm of her husband. Give me a charming woman candidate, please.

For Veep: Richardson, Warner, Bayh and Vilsack are the best choices, each choice depending on the nominee.

If Daschle runs I will put him in my number 2 slot. I know many around here dislike him but he has always been a favorite of mine, regardless of the establishment view - because he is witty and clever and a smart politician - and mild mannered, too.

Obama and Clinton both are wonderful Senators, and would be good Presidents. But both carry there own share of issues. Clinton's baggage, and Obama's unexperience in the Senate. In my opinion, I believe Senator Kerry would be our best candidate in 2008. I understand those who don't share my view, but it's my view. And we'll see what happens in 2008. Until then, I'll continue to support Senator John Kerry for President.

Bernie Sanders.

We haven't had a decent socialist candidate since the days of Eugene V. Debs and the perennially running Presbyterian minister Norman Thomas! Sanders as a non corporate alternative.

A Socialist would have a platform like a real Democrat would (check out Norman Thomas' platform in '32 -- it was adopted by FDR AFTER he got elected). That's where FDR got all those safety net ideas we now consider the bedrock of the Democratic Party.
