Bush, Rumsfeld Defend Strategy

They Say Surge In Violence Won't Change Iraq Goals

By Ann Scott Tyson and Michael A. Fletcher
Washington Post Staff Writers
Saturday, October 21, 2006; Page A01

President Bush and Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld yesterday defended the U.S. strategy in Iraq, saying the ultimate goals remain unchanged despite escalating violence and increasingly somber assessments from military leaders on the ground.

Speaking at a Washington fundraiser, Bush said the U.S. goal in Iraq "is clear and unchanging": creating a country that can govern and defend itself and "that will be an ally in the war against these extremists."

In a briefing later at the Pentagon, Rumsfeld played down the significance of fighting and sectarian violence that have erupted over the past few days outside Baghdad, as U.S. troops in Iraq suffer some of the highest monthly casualties since the 2003 invasion....

1. U.S. goal in Iraq "is clear and unchanging"
"We have high confidence that they have weapons of mass destruction. That is what this war was about and it is about."

2. Yup, by my count, the goal has change at least 3 times...
...now it's basically, run out the clock and let the next President worry about it.

3. Their real goal hasn't changed at all
Just their cover story.

Their real goal is to kill all the Iraqis and keep all their oil. That goal seems to be going quite well.

4. That was just the start of their dream of world conquest
Iraq was to have been used as a staging area for an invasion of Iran. I hope they don't follow through on that.

5. Yup, running out the clock is exactly what they're doing.
1. WMD: There were none. 2. Rescue Iraq from Saddam: Done in a month. 3. Bring market-democracy: Torn apart by militias. 4. Throw Al Qaeda out of Anbar. They weren't there at the start. 5. Keep Iran from dominating the Shi'ites. Another new problem.

Here are just a few of his earlier statements on Iraq. "Our goal is 葉o defeat terror," 葉o have a lasting peace," 預 swift transition," 葉o help Iraqi security forces," 葉o help build a more tolerant and hopeful society," and so on. More recently, he's boiled it down to "Our goal is victory." Who could argue?

But closer analysis shows he has three goals that have not changed:
1. A unified Iraq government
2. with a western democracy
3. that is friendly to the US.

The problem now is that all three of these key goals are slipping out of reach. Losing the second goal is a tragedy for Iraq and disappointment for the US. Losing #1 and #3 could be a disaster for the US.

Bush cannot stand to lose on all three, but the problem for America is all three may now be impossible to achieve容ven with the best leadership. And we are still stuck with the team that had 85% support of the Iraqis and in three years turned it into a 60% majority favoring attacks on our troops. There is no way this axis of incompetence, Cheney-Rumsfeld-Bush, is going to pull this one out of the fire.

6. I do not think the President is worried a lot. Maybe with this
He will not get Congress but I think he is just one of these people who does not think he is wrong so what he does is fine. He seems to act like many that try to rule as an elite that knows what is best for 'the people'. It is almost as if he has not read history and found out that years and years ago most countries got rid of 'royals' that ruled like that and went to a constitutional style of govt. with rights set down in black and white. The 'Royal' families that ruled like that are all gone but Bush does not seem to know it and either does his base. They trust him and seem to want to run the country like that.

7. Clear and unchanging? Does anyone know what it is?
This supposed goal seems more cryptic and elusive
than clear and unchanging. WTF ??

8. strategy or neo-colonial scheme?

1. Maintain the unequal agreements for Anglo-American energy corporations in Iraq and the other draconian corporatist-colonial economics embodied in the Coalition edicts and new "Constitution" of Iraq.

2. Maintain the logistics flow of personnel resources and supplies to support the US presence indefinitely.

3. Maintain the flow of Defense dollars to corporate contractor cronies, steer Iraqi capital and Iraqi natural resources to Anglo-American multi-national corporations and mideast client partners.

4. Control public perception by posturing behind numerous cultural myths and disinformation to justify our totally amoral exploitation by conquest.

at the end of the rainbow. It's really not much more than myth, but they trot it out there to keep the sheep focused.

11. Nice.
One thing I want to know is, where do people find those weird shots of Bush sitting, waiting for his que to start talking? Do those come off of German satellite feeds or something?
