Exclusive: Book says Bush just using Christians
Tempting Faith author David Kuo worked for Bush from 2001 to 2003

More than five years after President Bush created the Office of Faith-Based Initiatives, the former second-in-command of that office is going public with an insiders tell-all account that portrays an office used almost exclusively to win political points with both evangelical Christians and traditionally Democratic minorities.

<<snip>>

Entitled Tempting Faith, the book is not scheduled for release until Oct. 16, but MSNBCs Countdown with Keith Olbermann has obtained a copy.

Tempting Faiths author is David Kuo, who served as special assistant to the president from 2001 to 2003. A self-described conservative Christian, Kuos previous experience includes work for prominent conservatives including former Education Secretary and federal drug czar Bill Bennett and former Attorney General John Ashcroft.

<<snip>>

National Christian leaders received hugs and smiles in person and then were dismissed behind their backs and described as ridiculous, out of control, and just plain goofy, Kuo writes.

More seriously, Kuo alleges that then-White House political affairs director Ken Mehlman knowingly participated in a scheme to use the office, and taxpayer funds, to mount ostensibly nonpartisan events that were, in reality, designed with the intent of mobilizing religious voters in 20 targeted races.

2. No kidding.
Too bad fox news, talk radio, and christian radio will make sure most of them never hear about the book.

3. Oh... they'll hear about it all right.....
MSNBC is trying to get Dobson, Falwell, etc.. to read it and comment ASAP...

Someone over on the Gen/Discussion section here said last night that the book had gone from #350 to #17 on Amazon.com in TWO DAYS!!!

And it hit #17 the day BEFORE IT WAS RELEASED!!! (Which only shows the immense interest in the book)

It was only released today, so give it time... it will make buzz in the Christian society because of who wrote it..

4. Interesting cover.
But once again, I'm amazed that this SHOCKING REVELATION is something that we all in DU knew to be standard practice. Yawn.

5. Tucker Carlson (gag) on MSNBC is covering the book right now..
Good to see the media discussing what Rove said and how Bush is a "FAKE CHRISTIAN"

The words on the screen under Tucker right now say "Christians Duped By Bush?"

6. Hardball has Tony Perkins on tonight to comment on it
:puke:

Last I looked today the book is #12 on Amazon. It is confirmed in LA Time article today that Kuo will be on 60 Minutes Sunday. I predict this book will be in Top 10 of Amazon and B&N.
