1. This quote from BARTCOP is SUPERB

Quote of the Day

"I'm not going to take a lecture on morality from
a party that took hush money from a child predator,"
-- Harold Ford Jr. (D) in Memphis via e-mail

2. Did you notice the GOP mailing with a "dark" Ford pictured?
Seems they photo-shopped a picture of Ford, and made him look more dark-skinned. Just like the GOP to appeal to the best qualities of Tennesseans by playing the race card. But I loved the suggestion for how to deal with it: call them on this blatant racism and demand a retraction and apology. Then when they do neither, bring up this issue again and again until the election.

Go, Harold, GO!

3. whatever works
they need to get all the toothless Vols to the polls next month. I don't think subtlety will do the trick.

5. "toothless Vols" ? What?
If I understood what you meant by that, I suspect I'd be offended. Since I don't understand, I'll only caution you against being an asshole.

4. It's a little more delicate than that
I have Tennessee relatives--they're mostly conservative Democrats, long time Gore supporters who still got hornswaggled into voting for Bush in 2000 & 2004. They've recently lost the scales from their eyes, but not soon enough.

One thing that turns them off about mainstream Democrats is the whining. Don't ask me how they excuse Republican whining, which I find to be much worse, but for some reason they have a double standard there. I don't see hammering on the race baiting to be effective with them. In the past they've said very favorable things about Harold Ford, as well as about his father (Harold). But at least once they've mentioned about how light he is--the question of race lurks below the surface. One gripe Tennessee fence sitters have about blacks that they can state without feeling racist is that blacks talk about race too much.

Harold, like Harold, doesn't talk about race at all. He talks about Tennessee things like a Tennesseean and that strategy has been working for him. It's a core strength. If he starts complaining about race, however justified it is in this case, he will unwittingly bring up latent prejudices among many voters that he would otherwise win over. It could cost him more votes than he'd win over--given that most of the people who'd be insensed by this race baiting are already going to vote for Ford.

His smart tact is to keep hammering on the Bushies and the Republicans and let some surrogate in the media talk "Photoshopgate".

6. If I were Ford, I'd do the same damn thing to his lilywhite candidate
I'd get a picture and tone the guy down, subtly, but just enough, and make a fact based list about why people shouldn't vote for him, and send it out to the GOP voting list.

And I wouldn't say a word otherwise. The sharp ones will get it, the racist dunces will think their good ole boy has 'a brush a'the tarrr' and might stay home.
