I just looked at an election 2004 map again, and was struck by the regionalism - it's just so stark: Three blue regions (plus Hawaii) of the country, with a continuous connected geography within each:

The Northeast from D.C. up to Maine.
The four connected Upper Great Lakes states - Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota.
The West Coast from Washington down to California.
