1. It's been my experience that that isn't the case.
I work as a designer for a weekly newsrag, and I've been politically active. One of our copy editors is like a super-activist, all kinds of causes. It'll depend on company policy, but I personally don't know anyone who's been prevented except in the case of reporters working for politicians they have to cover, which they shouldn't anyway, obviously.

2. Only if you write the news
I'd say. Even if you wrote editorials you should be ok, just have to do disclosure. I'd think doing graphics you are clean.

Good luck!

7. Graphics? Shouldn't be a problem, but...
best to check their ethics policies on non-newsgathering employees being active.

For reporters, it's usually a big no-no to be openly partisan or support candidates. Some have gotten into trouble just for donating money to campaigns.

Good luck getting the job.

11. Hi backatcha...
can't complain much even though it's been a bitch finding work since I moved to Long Island.

Sunrise on the inlet I'm living on helps the mood:

(Too bad none of the sailboats are mine.)

Sunset on the beach not too far away isn't bad either:

(Some day, cheap digital cameras won't wash out the incredible orange of the sun rising and setting.)

12. Good question...
My friends wife works for a paper. She wasn't allowed to go to any political events and they are not allowed to have yard signs. She's an editor. It may be something they frown on. Her husband is uber political and often attended events on his own.

All you can do is ask, but it is a possibility if they want to remain an air of neutrality. While being owned by Gannet. We talked about the hypocrisy often.

That aside, good luck!

15. I worked at The Republican back where you used to live and
I didn't stop. I kept it a little on the down-low though, but that was partially because of the tone of the newspaper.

I'm pretty sure the only place that can legally control your political activity is any department of state (and maybe city) government. Then again...what they don't know can't hurt you...a friend of mine was working for the state senate while active in Clark's campaign....

working in the graphics department, it shouldn't be a problem, though the paper might have a specific policy. Wouldn't hurt to ask them. (You can wait until they offer the job, if you think it might effect the interview process :))
