Heavy turnout reported in CT
Turnout for today's Democratic primary reached 19 percent by noon in Norwich, much higher than usual for a party primary, Democratic Registrar of Voters Nancy DePietro said. By noon, 1,325 of the 6,908 registered Democrats had voted.

“I think the candidates did a really good job,” DePietro said. “They're the ones who get the people out to vote.”

*****************

Waterford's voter turnout has far surpassed 2004 August primary numbers, according to Democratic Registrar Wendy Pias. While in 2004 just 14 percent of Democrats turned out to vote in the Jim Sullivan vs. Shaun McNally race for the 2nd Congressional District seat, today 23 percent of registered Democrats had turned out seven hours before polls were set to close.
“That's major for us,” Pias said.

I think this is a good sign for Ned and spell trouble for Joe.

2. I believe this is bad news for Joe, as well
Heavy voter turnout means not just the party regulars (who would be dependable Lieberman voters) but motivated first-timers and less conscientious voters are going to the polls. If those people were happy with Lieberman's representation, they wouldn't be motivated to turn out. Continued high turnout does not bode well for Mr. Lieberman.

3. OK, I plead to being naive, but if 19% is HIGH, what in the world is
it in a normal primary? I'm sorry, but to me 19% sounds like very few really care!!!!

5. Primary turnout tends to be
around 20-25% on average TOTAL. Turnout of 19% at this time of the day is good (as far as turnout) because you still have people who are working that haven't voted.

7. that is 7 hours before the polls close
:hi:

I read yesterday that the talking heads were expecting a 25% turnout and some were saying that it can reach 30%. I think it can easily reach 40% which is awesome for an August primary.

10. That was the percentage that voted by noon. If they double that it would
be close to 40% for a primary in August. That would be fantastic. Presumabely there are some absentee ballots to be counted as well.

6. Good news for representative democracy!
I guess all those pajama clad basement dwellers are stumbling out into the light of day, starbucks clenched tightly in fist, trudging like some scene from The Night of The Living Dead (or perhaps more like Sean of the Dead) toward polling stations to dethrone prince joe.

9. I hope so. I could be wrong but I
can't imagine people being this pumped up to keep Joe Lieberman.

8. You bet it's a good sign! Traditionally, LOW turnout favors Repubs.
So HIGH turnout should be BAD for the Repub in this race!

11. Hopefully a heavy Democratic voter turnout today is a good indication
of heavy Democratic voter turnout in November. The Dems really do need to get out and vote this year!

16. Just got back from voting for NED!!
and the poll worker said that turnout had been steady all day - quite a bit more than usual for primaries in our neighborhood. He's been a poll worker for over 20 years.... Go Ned!!

17. That's great!
Good job CT voters.

I just voted for Ned. :bounce:

It's good to see people coming out to vote regardless of whom they vote for. Of course I want Ned to win but it's an encouraging sign that people are coming out to vote.

18. That is AWESOME!
People typically don't turn out in high numbers if they're happy with the status quo.

GO NED!
