He's urging passage of the Gasoline Price-Gouging Act, which he co-authored on the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee
AMHERST--Congressman Sherrod Brown (D-Lorain County) today called for immediate action by the federal government to curtail rapidly rising gas costs.
"For most Ohioans, wages are stagnant, while gas prices continue to skyrocket," Brown said. "At the same time, oil companies are reporting record profits. It's time to stand up for Ohio families and bring these prices down."
Gas prices have increased sharply in recent weeks, topping $2.75 per gallon in many Ohio communities. Analysts have predicted that prices could hit $3 per gallon this summer.
"The CEO of ExxonMobile earned about $13,700 an hour last year," Brown said. "This issue is about choosing sides. Republican leadership in Congress let the energy companies write the energy bill that sent prices soaring, and has turned a blind eye to the struggles of working families trying to make ends meet."
Brown is the co-author of bipartisan legislation, the Gasoline Price-Gouging Act, that would protect consumers from unfair gasoline price gouging in the aftermath of emergencies. He also sponsored legislation that would create a gasoline reserve to prevent price spikes, saving money for consumers. Brown has worked in Congress to move towards energy independence by investing in alternative fuel sources.
"It's time for a new direction. Instead of lining the pockets of millionaire CEOs, we need to invest in renewable sources of energy and crack down on price gouging," Brown said.
