New NBC Today host Meredith Vieira on Iraq: "Everything's built on lies!"
New NBC "Today" host on Iraq: "Everything's built on lies!"

Does the "liberal news media" finally have (gasp) a liberal?

http://www.pnionline.com/dnblog/attytood/archives/003063.html

Meet Meredith Vieira, new co-host of NBC's "Today" show, and a woman also not afraid to speak out on some of her progressive beliefs.

In fact, in 2004, Vieira, her husband (a former CBS producer who's written of his long struggle with MS), and her teenaged daughter actually marched against the war in Iraq on the eve of the GOP convention in New York (as pictured at the top of this post). She spoke of it immediately afterwards on ABC's "The View":

I don't know if you saw the cover of the New York Post, but I believe this is me right here on the cover (which had a picture of hundreds of people). I went to that demonstration yesterday, not because I'm, you know what, I didn't go anti-Bush or pro-Kerry, I'm still so upset about this war and I'm so proud I live in a country where you can protest.

Earlier, in 2004, in June, Vieira was even more explicit during a discussion about Saddam Hussein regarding her "view" of the war in Iraq: "Who knows anymore because everything's been built on lies. Everything! I mean the entire pre-text for war."

1. Should we start a pool on how short will her job tenure will be?
I suspect it's gonna be a LOT less than 15 years.

4. I'm thinkin' Matt Lauer will ask for her termination...
...five minutes after the first open criticism of Bush. OR...it could turn into an early-morning Hannity & Colmes, with recipes and other fluff.

WE...SHALL...SEE.

7. I missed that, but I saw his article with Kitty Kelley...
...right after her Bush book came out. He made no attempt to conceal his contempt and hatred for the woman. In pure Sean Hannity fashion, he spit out the words with slow and deliberate pauses between each: "HOW...can you...MAKE...these...ACCUSATIONS...against a SITTING PRESIDENT...at a time of WAR?"

Well, Matt, she made the accusations because he really did that stuff. Now let's bring out Wolfgang Puck, who's going to prepare a tangy mango salsa!

:grr:

18. Time of War?
Damn disingenuous of the King George the Worst followers to speak of criticizing a sitting President in time of war, when the damn war was started intentionally by him, with no justification for its being waged, except for the lies he spread to the American people.

3. No DAMMIT she is a journalist.
I believe her to be a liberal but she is a journalist and the first time she ever does any kind of piece or interview in which she pisses off our fellow DUers she will be labeled a whore, facist, et al.

I'm sick and God Damned tired of this mentality that whenever I journalist is objective and does not promote one side over the other they are somehow whores. I'm not going to ignore FOX NEWS and others for their slanted journalism but I think too many DAMN DUers are to quick to praise or demonize.

If Meredith does an interview with a liberal and asks tough but objective questions or plays the devils advocate she will immediately be labeled a whore.

6. I didn't like the "liberal" line in the article myself...
"Does the "liberal news media" finally have (gasp) a liberal?"...

...because so what if she is, so what if she isn't. But I thought it was important to include it because it does reflect a common attitude, and the incessant need we have in society to "label" people.

And you're right...also consider Barack Obama. The MINUTE he took office...THE MINUTE HE TOOK OFFICE...there were "Obama 2008" posts popping up all over DU.

He voted for Condi Rice as S.O.S...and POOF! There went the "Obama 2008" posts.

He recently issued a message of support for Joe Lieberman. The reaction? STORM CASTLE OBAMA! BURN THE HERETIC!

The truth is that life is ONE...BIG...GREY...AREA.

The people who insist that they live at one EXTREME end of the spectrum or the other are USUALLY liars, or at MINIMUM ass-clowns, and in the WORST CASE they are LYING ASS-CLOWNS.

9. Vieira is no liberal.
I quit watching the show because of the jabs she kept taking at Bill Clinton.

At the time, my impression of the make-up of The View's panel was that Starr was the Democrat, Joy was the independent, and Vieira was the Republican. I seem to recall discussions that made it clear that her husband was a Republican, too. Maybe I got it all wrong but what I heard them say certainly fit in with my perceptions of their politics.

It's great that she has seen the light about the war but that does NOT make her a liberal.

Did you see her on Bill Mahr's show last year. She's very liberal and seems to
despise Bush as much as we do.

But being a comedian first, she has no problem throwing out zingers in all directions and I wasn't in the mood for it after all the Clinton bashing I had heard at the time. :hi:

Edited to add smilie so you know I don't mean to sound argumentative. :)

11. sorry, but you did get it partly wrong
Meredith isn't repub or dem, she's more independent. She voted for Nader in 2000 and she plays devil's advocate to both sides. As far as her husband, he's been very vocal about this illegal war.

16. This was all long before the war, when Clinton was still president.
When Vieira was doing a supposedly nonpolitical feature on a baseball team and out of the blue, asks the catcher if he can identify with Monica Lewinski, being on his knees all the time, it was pretty clear to me she wasn't a liberal. We were all pretty sick of the Clinton jokes at that point -- at least, I sure was!

And I thought she had said that her husband supported the first Bush. I do believe it's possible to be a Republican who is anti-war, as the polls about the war are now suggesting.

My gut feeling about Vieira is that she will support whatever cause or view is popular at the time. She strikes me as the ultimate opportunist. I've never been angry enough to actually write a television program before until her so I don't expect to be watching CBS news come fall.

Anyway, don't go by me -- I'm clearly pretty opinionated where she's concerned. :hi:

19. she did great work on el salvador in the 80s
She was part of a short-lived show (forget the name) featuring young journalists. Dunno what you'd label her as, but i doubt she'd ever say "Navy Seals rock" during a hard news segment. shure, the view is fluff, but that's what it was meant to be. I think she'll surprise us on 'Today'

22. I remember that show ...
It was call "West 57th Street," if I remember correctly. The Big Black Box, a.k.a. CBS network headquarters, was located on that street.

Vieira was just a young pup then.

Although I know the Today show is mostly a fluff show and she most likely won't be letting her political views known too often, at least she won't be subtly whoring for Shrub and co. like Katie was so fond of doing.

And here's hoping Katie is a disaster at CBS and they come up with a decent replacement...
