Not bad enough yet = why Senators not embracing censure
OK, I know most, if not all, of you are saying, "What are you, nuts ?" I agree that it's been bad enough for a long time. However, we have to remember that "we" could be called members of the political intelligentsia who are informed enough to have a clue of what's going on.
I harken back to 1974, when I watched Nixon on a daily basis defy all logic by staying in office. The situation was similar then to what we face now. The Watergate hearings started in June 1973, and yes, I'm sure a few Democratic firebrands were calling for impeachment in 1973. However, impeachment or removal from office was very definitely the minority position until probably a few weeks before he resigned. Mind you, this all occurred years before the internet spread information so rapidly.
I was amazed in 1974 how much bull excrement the public put up with from Nixon and his gang. Most people either 1) don't pay attention; 2) usually don't care; 3) like the way things are; 4)think the other party is worse; 5) think all politicians are crooks so what's the big deal ?; or 6) all of the above.
Things are NOT bad enough yet. Nixon's poll numbers were either in the low 20's or high teens before the Democrats started talking seriously about impeachment. I think they are playing a waiting game.

1. Senators don't feel the need
to risk much to make a statement because shrub is self-destructing.

As I recall, it was so thick by the time Nixon resigned that there was no opposition to him taking that action. The Watergate Committee (a body infinitely more honest that anything we have now) did all the work so it was not really up to individual members of Congress to stick their necks out.

4. If most Democrats are blasé
people think it must not really be all that bad. We need leaders who educate and ...lead.

I think Nixon was at 27% when he resigned. I think 33% is the new low water mark. These people are unredeemable bushbots who would support bush even if horns pop out of his head. They are people that won't vote for Democrats to save their children's lives.

Its EASY to vote for censure, especially knowing it will fail. A censure vote will turn November's elections into a referendum on bush.

5. Help. I'm confused.
Is a referendum on Bush good or bad for him?

For the record, I support Senator Feingold's call for censure.
