This could be a turning point?
Faith Hill, Tim McGraw Blast 'Humiliating' Katrina Cleanup
Country Stars Lash Out in Anger Over Conditions in Storm-Ravaged States

I know country stars turning on Bush is pretty trivial, but lets see how they are dealt with. I don't think Clear Channel will be able to "Dixie Chick" Tim McGraw & Faith Hill. They are the first couple of country music. This might get more people to turn against Bush if they see they aren't going to be ridiculed or destroyed. The way Katrina was handled has upset a lot of people in South. If the only people complaining are lumped with Ray Nagin & Jesse Jackson, it gets marginalized. The opinion in RED minds, not effected by Katrina, is that the victims are just looking for hand-outs. Like it or not, Tim McGraw has more clout in the South than Jesse Jackson. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Check out the poll results.

3. When Toby Keith "sees the light"
It'll probably be the light of a train bearing down on him.

2. How many "turning points" does it take before we realize...
...we're just going around the same block over and over and over?

5. You're right...
I think this is VERY important. These people have a lot of clout with the redneck crowd. It's important when people like them actually open their eyes to what's going on and speak out about it. This isn't a Natalie Maines moment, this is more important than that.

6. This isn't trivial as you'd think.
I know two very shallow-minded Republican voters who are big Tim McGraw fans & this could cause them to actually process a thought.

7. I think this will make a difference
Tim and Faith are very popular, and carry a lot of weight in rural areas. You don't get much more American than country music, and these two are definitely at the top of the country music "who's who" lists.

It's the little things that sometimes matter most.

8. Could indeed be a turning point: just as the radicalization...
Edited on Thu Mar-09-06 04:12 PM by newswolf56
of pop singers was a big turning point in the 1960s. The folk singers -- Reed, Bikel, Gooding, Baez, Seeger, Guthrie, Darling, Sky et al -- were always radical, but the pop singers (with the very notable exception of the Muse-poet Tim Buckley) were merely musical mercenaries until relatively late in the decade. Then there was such an outpouring of protest songs -- still plastic, to be sure, but protest songs nevertheless -- they couldn't be kept off the airwaves by the payola-censored broadcasters. Maybe -- goddess willing -- the same thing will happen with country music, which has the single largest musical constituency in the U.S.

There is also the 99-percent rule: for every person who speaks up, 99 more feel the same way but are too afraid (or too disheartened) to do anything save suffer in silence.

So -- yes -- this might be much more significant than it seems.

Edit: typo.
