Sorry for the smart alecky subject line-it will never happen again.
Yes my long awaited observations of the SOTU speech are now available.
Okay so no to evil and no to isolationism.....was this really in the realm of possibility? No of course not W was just throwing a bone to "the base" and basically implying that Dems want isolationism (please ignore anything you ever learned about political science to allow this to come close to making any sense) and of course Dems want to surrender to evil.
The New York TImes headline on the speech actually reads "In Annual Address, Bush Warns About Dangers of Isolationism" so you could tell how the press was going to react to this (more on that is a bit)
I noticed a woman dressed in while sitting in the front aisle seat. Every time she stood up the Republican side stood up, when she sat down they sat down. It was like it was all scripted. Well they actually screwed that up to:
Shortchanging these efforts would increase the suffering and chaos of our world, undercut our long-term security, and dull the conscience of our country. I urge members of Congress to serve the interests of America by showing the compassion of America.
Danger at home <---- it was right here that W paused for applause. None came. Condi must have missed the mark on that one.
Our country must also remain on the offensive against terrorism here at home. The enemy has not lost the desire or capability to attack ushttp://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/01/31/sotu.transcript/I love the shot of Hillary laughing at W's excuse on breaking the FISA law and the 4th Amendment.
The Dems were also laughing at W's attempt to not connect words in a sentence but to imply that making tax cuts permanent would actually cut the deficit (If you care about the deficit)
Because America needs more than a temporary expansion, we need more than temporary tax relief. I urge the Congress to act responsibly, and make the tax cuts permanent.
Tackling spending
Keeping America competitive requires us to be good stewards of tax dollars. Every year of my presidency, we have reduced the growth of nonsecurity discretionary spending -- and last year you passed bills that cut this spending.
This year my budget will cut it again, and reduce or eliminate more than 140 programs that are performing poorly or not fulfilling essential priorities. By passing these reforms, we will save the American taxpayer another $14 billion next year -- and stay on track to cut the deficit in half by 2009. That was fun.
The Today show has completely and finally jumped the shark. Katie, Lauer, Brokaw, and Russert might as well step aside and let Karen Hughes brighten their studio with her starpower and host the show from now on.
Lastly-Kaine did a very good job. I have read on this site about how Ted Kennedy should have given the response speech (yeah that will reach the masses) hell if I look hard enough I'll bet someone has posted that Cindy Sheehan should have given it from her jail cell. Look this is supposed to be the statesman-esque moment to either state your ideals and goals or do a Clinton and basically outline what is in the budget (to be described as "pie in the sky" by the experts who apparently haven't read the budget). It is not time to fling feces around. See in the next few years Sen.John Warner will be retiring and someone needs to fill that spot. This gets Kaine on the national stage and prepares him to take that spot, probably against Eric Cantor- for those of you who might some day be interested in having a majority in the Senate.
Anyone here old enough remembers Clinton's first appearance on the national stage in 1988 (didn't go so well) this was Kaine's introduction and he did very well. Thank you very much.
