Although Mercedes would be in the Daimler-Chrysler family. Chrysler has made changes and is not as unhealthy as Ford & GM.

107. Love my 1999 Honda C-RV
Gets about 28 miles to the gallon (and quite often better on highways) and have never had a single problem with it. It now has 106K and I'm certain it's got that much more left on the engine. Keep up on the maintenance and it could last even longer! What amazes me about this car is that it's been paid off for nearly two years and it's still worth half what I paid for it!

I originally wanted a Subaru Forrester but they wouldn't handle the financing. I couldn't have asked for a better second choice!

111. Thanks.
I asked a transmission mechanic for advice on well built cars and he told me in his 22 years of running his shop he had seen less than 10 Hondas.

I put lots of mileage on cars and I need something dependable.

a Subaru with over 200K, also told me that Honda transmissions are made very well. She (yes, she~~Dr. Peggy I call her!) said she's seen Honda transmissions with over 200K and still going strong. I was amazed, and pleased, as well! I'm feeling a little more certain that after I've finished driving my Honda into the ground (as I do with all my cars!) that I'll be going hybrid, but that's probably quite a ways off... Honda, are ya hearing me???

130. In addition to our Honda, we've owned Chryslers and GMs.
To be honest, I guess we've been lucky because we haven't had a lick of problems with any of them.

We currently own the CR-V as well as a 2002 Chrysler Town & Country (currently has 84K miles on it, not a bit of trouble) and a Pontiac Grand Prix (150K miles on it, no problems at all). We recently sold our 1994 Plymouth Voyager minivan (190K miles and one transmission replacement).

I honestly can't say that we've had any cars that have been lemons. It killed me to buy the Honda instead of an American car (although our last three "American" cars were built in Canada!)

I had specific needs that had to be met. I wanted something that would get a little better mileage than my Chrysler (which is a wonderful minivan) because I drive a lot for work. I did NOT want a "car" because I am in and out of my vehicle at least 10 times per day, so I needed something that seats you up high (like my minivan). I would have looked at a hybrid, but I live in an area that's rural to suburban, and I didn't think I'd be breaking enough and sitting at lights enough to gain benefit from one. Also, we had a budget that really didn't allow for a hybrid at this time.

I had narrowed it down to a Saturn Vue, Toyota Rav4, and a Ford Escape. After exhaustive research, and test driving each one, my husband and I agreed that the Honda gave us everything we needed. We're currently saving about $58/month by my driving the Honda versus the T&C. We are constantly amazed at how small the car looks on the outside, because it feels so big on the inside. In addition, he's a tall guy and he has TONS of head room.

So, while I have a great track record with my "American" cars, the Honda won out.

if i were going to buy an american car, it would not be a ford. sorry, ford, but you build on planned obsolescence and i cannot afford you.

27. "build on planned obsolescence"
I am not a Ford person, I prefer Chrysler products.

But the planned obsolescence and 14 year old Mercury Grand Marquis do not belong in the same post.

I would hope that everyone at least tries to buy an American assembled if not manufactured car. You can find the information on the window sticker. The corporations will not change if we don't change them ourselves.

12,000lbs of Carbon not emitted into the atmosphere (according to the inimitable Umbra Fisk over at Grist)! I didn't realize how much I spent on all my rides until I had to stop driving, I viewed it as a curse at first. Eventually I found it to be kind of cool, no stress from the commute, no insurance payments!, vehicles just nickle & dime you and you don't realize the extent of it.

How do you get around in Austin (one of my FAVORITE places) without a car? I cringe when I look back at all the costs of car payments, insurance, maintenance and nowadays gas prices. I save a bundle. Each month it only costs me $76 for unlimited rides on the NYC transit. What a savings! :-)

I do love me some Austin, Texas. I lived in San Antonio when I was 19 to almost 21 (a year and a half). I loved the trips to Austin. I backpack it all over NYC. It takes me 20-30 minutes to get to work via a crosstown bus and then an express train to Grand Central that only makes 2 stops from where I get on. I could never go back to a car culture.

And I am not a prick. I just like fine machines, be they guitars, stereos, cars, or fishing reels.

In the interest of environmental issues, this car is only driven a few times a month. I walk anywhere I want to go in our little town.

Pontiac Grand Prix - family car
Dodge Caravan (1989) - former family car- now used for hauling dogs around.
Ford F250 (1989) - used for camping.
Chevy Sprint - converted to full electric - daily to/from work.
John Deere tractor - husband helps out the neighbors with all their yard and landscaping needs. Great for snow shoveling and getting to the store in an ice storm.

66. The Sprint can do about 30 miles before a recharge, and it's
top speed is over 60 mph. (that was measured at the electric drags here in Oregon). A lot of your range will depend on your speed and your terrain - the more hills, the less the mileage. Check in your area for charging stations. Here in the Portland area, there are charging stations downtown, and our house is listed on the national list as a charging station out here in the west suburbs.

And yes, the clothing is not optional. <g>

some of the electrical items (windshield wipers, heat, etc) on a separate system powered by a solar panel on the hood. Several of the guys that are in the electric vehicle association here have cars that have a/c, though.

While I was there (my youngest daughter is a graduate of Portland State) I didn't see much sunlight. I am just assuming you are not in Maine...

Never understood why a room size air conditioner is $150.00 and getting a car's a/c fixed is a thousand bucks.

Thanks for all the info.

Loves it. I drive a 2001 Subaru Forrester, and it's great too. I think we're a Sub family from here on out.

We've also got an '83 BMW 533i that needs some work. Daughter (14yo) will drive it to school when it's fixed--parts are kind of hard to come by and not cheap. Son (20yo) drives a '96 Saab 900, but he bought that with his own money. Also got an '82 Chevy pick-up, just for hauling stuff around the farm, a '94 RV on a Ford cab, a '46 Studebaker flat-bed hubby is restoring, a '56 Massy-Ferguson tractor, and a really old but I don't remember the year D-4 Cat dozer. Looks like a used car lot around here sometimes.

Believe it or not, I bought this car for my dog. I was shopping for a Taurus after my last one died. My son, who was with me, suggested that I buy the station wagon so that my Rottweiler would have more room in the back.

40. '98 Toyota Tacoma
Edited on Sat Jan-28-06 12:43 PM by doubleplusgood
Best truck I've ever had & 3rd Toyota truck since 1978. Sold my '85 Toyota pickup when it had 250K miles; my '98 now has 135K miles & still going strong. In 1987 my wife bought an '86 Ford Bronco II from a trusted source...found out later it was considered to be one of the worst vehicles ever made, nothing but trouble: transmission problems, gear shift broke off, both door locks failed, air conditioning failed, oil leaks, you name it. Bottom line: I'll never buy an American car again.

46. Toyota matrix which I love almost as much as I loved my
very first toyota corolla.

My daughter drives my second corolla, which for some reason I didn't love.

All of my corollas have been amazingly reliable considering my hit and miss car maintenance.

My first car was a used mitsubishi, which is why I will never by a "lemon" yellow car again. And I had a chevette, which was fine, but didn't last nearly as long as my corollas have.

I'm told I'll be sick of my Matrix before it wears out, but I don't know, I love this car.

Beretta, 2 actually, 1990 models, one is a regular model 4 cyl automatic gotten 90k miles on it in 7 years of ownership. The other I bought since the first was so reliable, is a Indy 500 Pace Car Edition, V6 with a rebuilt engine, the body has no rust or damage and the paint is just slightly faded in a couple of spots very good condition. I'd put these cars against any Honda and Toyota around the same age as proof that Honda and Toyota cars are overhyped when it comes to reliability.
