**See, once the American people realize there's a problem, then they're going to start asking members of Congress from both parties, why aren't you doing something to fix it?**
( HELL, WE SEE THE PROBLEM AND WE ARE TRYING TO DO JUST THAT. YOU DON'T LISTEN.)
I don't think the American people want a President who relies upon polls and focus groups to make decisions for the American people.
I've traveled the country to talk with the American people.
I think people are opposing my nominees because they don't like the judicial philosophy of the people I've nominated.
But I also understand the mind of the American people. They're wondering what's going on. They're wondering why we can't come together and get an energy bill, for example.
In other words, this is a serious problem (social security), and the American people expect us to put our politics aside and get it done.
The American people expect us to do that. (detain those who *might* do harm)
One of the jobs of the President is to help people reconcile and to move forward and to unite.
it's really important for people to understand that the protection of sources and the protections of methods and how we use information to understand the nature of the enemy is secret.
And I'm going to continue talking about this issue and reminding the American people about the importance of the Patriot Act and how necessary it is for us in Washington, D.C. to do our job to protect you.
Secondly, if people want to play politics with the Patriot Act, it's -- let me just put it -- it's not in the best interests of the country.
