failure.
failure to make the case to the vast majority who don't want roe v wade overturned (poll after poll shows it).

failure to make the case of alito's "superiorty of the executive branch" comments.

failure to play the race card against alito.

Failure.

If we can't beat one right wing extremist, how are we going to win the November elections?

Think about that for a second. Oh, and by the way:

Landrieu - get out of the party.
Byrd - get out of the party.
Johnson - get out of the party.

5. I really don't think it matters.
Since Bush can ignore the law, I don't think that it makes much difference if there even IS a Supreme Court, and even less who is on it.

6. Maybe that's the problem
Same old tired liberal arguments, abortion and "playing the race card." (Why did you choose those words?)

Maybe we should have tried making the case on Family & Medical Leave, right of the retarded to not be harrassed at work, spousal notification specifically, mine safety, whether the court is for the people. All the people. If we don't start representing all the people in these arguments, we're going to continue to lose our fights.

7. this is 2006, not 1952
you win elections by attacking, emotion and catch phrases, not the "thoughtful liberal act".

8. Excuse me?
What exactly is "playing the race card"??? Sounds like rolling out the "thoughtful liberal act" to me.

Democrats have to be for all the people and expand the debate on abortion and racism to include other issues women and minorities are facing. Doesn't matter to me what kind of catch phrases they use to do it, but they need to do it. That's how Brian Schweitzer won, by dealing with the direct needs of Montanans, not the "thoughtful liberal" issues of saving trees and stopping hunting. Which isn't to say that I'm not for saving old growth and protecting wildlife, just that Brian knew how to expand on those issues so that all the people could relate.

9. well...
"What exactly is "playing the race card"??? Sounds like rolling out the "thoughtful liberal act" to me."

It's using emotion to bring voters to your side -something the Repubs have excelled at and a major reason why we have't one any elections.

I hope stopping hunting is not a liberal philosophy.... The dems would never win again if they took that route. You also have to remember that Schweitzer is actually a likeable guy. That plays a huge part.

10. Interesting
"Playing the race card" is exactly what Democrats are accused of doing whenever race comes up, so I can't quite figure out why you would think that was a winning strategy. Or stopping hunting which is a pretty routine lefty protest in Montana. Not winning issues, like you say, but still routine. Which seems to me to be a bigger problem than how emotional somebody gets.
