How Does * Know About Stories Editors Will Print Before They....
print them? I've read here in at least two incidents * has summoned editors of NYT and WP to the WH to talk them out of printing stories that he feels are damaging to our security.

How does he know in advance what the editors are going to print? Do they tell him? Do they ask the WH if the stories are true to verify them? Does he tap their phones and spy on them to find out? How? How does he know?

4. when major newspapers run stories with national security implications
they often run them through the white house prior to publication. Generally the government cannot prevent them from running the story but if the govt ccan convince the paper it would damage national security sometimes the paper wont run the story. It's been this way for a very long time.

7. I hadn't even considered, but probably they've called the WH for comment
So many times we read that "so and so could not be reached for comment", or "their office had no comment". That would be a heads-up to the story.

8. Because they all work for the WH
They started campaining for Smirk in late 99, and have done nothing but kiss his ass ever since. You think Armstrong Williams, Judy Miller, and Jeff Gannon were anomalies?

10. Well, you know how he talks to G*d all the time
Perhaps the G-man clues him in about which papers are preparing to run which stories.

11. from "All the President's Men"
OPERATOR'S VOICE (V.O.)
Essex House, can I help you?

BERNSTEIN
John Mitchell, please.

There is a BUZZING SOUND. Then--

JOHN MITCHELL'S VOICE (V.O.)
Yes?

BERNSTEIN
Sir, this is Carl Bernstein of the
Washington Post, and I'm sorry to
bother you but we're running a story
in tomorrow's paper that we thought
you should have a chance to comment
on.

MITCHELL (V.O.)
What does it say?

BERNSTEIN
(starting to read)
John N. Mitchell, while serving as
US Attorney General, personally
controlled a secret cash fund that--

MITCHELL (V.O.)
--jeeeeeeesus--

BERNSTEIN
--fund that was used to gather
information against the Democrats--

MITCHELL (V.O.)
--jeeeeeeesus--

BERNSTEIN
--according to sources involved in
the Watergate investigation. Beginning
in the spring of 1971--

MITCHELL (V.O.)
--jeeeeeeesus--

BERNSTEIN
--almost a year before he left the
Justice Department--

MITCHELL (V.O.)
--jeeeeeeeeesus--

BERNSTEIN
--to become President Nixon's campaign
manager on March 1, Mitchell
personally approved withdrawals from
the fund--

MITCHELL (V.O.)
--all that crap, you're putting it
in the paper? It's all been denied.
You tell your publisher--tell Katie
Graham she's gonna get her tit caught
in a big fat wringer if that's
published. Good Christ! That's the
most sickening thing I ever heard.

BERNSTEIN
Sir, I'd like to ask you a few--

MITCHELL (V.O.)
--what time is it?

BERNSTEIN
11:30.

MITCHELL (V.O.)
Morning or night?

BERNSTEIN
Night.

MITCHELL (V.O.)
Oh.

And he hangs up.
