The Pentagon's Hispanic Panic
Ward Harkavy

Money is no object. Latinos and Latinas are.

from one of his readers:

snip-
Excellent post yesterday on the Pentagon's predatory tactics against my community's young people. If Latino & Latina youth stopped falling for the military's lies, we could stop this war in Iraq and many future wars.

You write that the Pentagon is spending $20 million a year in marketing to Latinos. However, I think the figure is actually much higher. Roberto Lovato recently did a great article for The Nation in which he states that the Pentagon's spending on Latino-targeted marketing is in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

There is so much to say about this, not the least of which is that the national Latino organization like NCLR and LULAC are supporting this . It's outrageous.

This article is mentioned inside the column:

1. I'm waiting for Smirk to offer
"special emergency citizenship" to those illegals who choose to enlist, rather than be deported.

3. Exactly, just like the Roman legions
they're going to start taking volunteers from anywhere in the world. "Join up and get a Green Card."

9. there is a way to serve in the military without being a US citizen
I don't know if you need to be a "documented" resident to do this.

10. They already are
Sort of.

There's something like 35,000-40,000 non-citizens in the US military right now. Most have been promised a fast-track to citizenship after their service (if they survive, of course).

2. Great subject
The Achilles heal of this big empire-building machine of the USA, is finding enough cannon fodder for its wars. If poor people--not just Latinos--start waking up, the power elite is going to be in a jam, 'cus you know their kids aren't going to go die.
