Don't tell me you are a Christian, Let me figure it our for myself
Heard this great line somewhere, someplace, don't remember where but I got it stashed in my evil liberal brain, locked and loaded ready to use at the drop of rehearsed sermonette.

1. They will know you by your actions
That is a good phrase to use when someone starts to preach. It might amuse you to know that my husband and I are sometimes complimented for our "Christian" actions-most of the time we don't enlighten the people as to our faith, but just smile.

2. My husband just got an invitation to attend services at a new church
that was just built on the outskirts of town (one of those monster churches they're building next to the McMansions). They guy who sent the invitation is a fellow lawyer but a staunch republican. Fine, nice invite and all that. We're Catholic, and we're pretty clear about our religion and which church we attend, so this invite has kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Why should we change churches? Why would we attend a new church with someone who is not a friend, in fact we really have noting in common with the man - not politics - not religion and certainly not ethics or morals.

You see, the man and his new wife....well she used to be his secretary until his wife found out about the affair and divorced him, then his secretary became his wife and his ex-wife became a Democrat.

Now he's a Newfound Christian and is going to save my husband...thanks buddy, but no thanks.

3. HA! - May I repeat
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 02:21 PM by BOSSHOG
"Don't tell me you're a Christian.

My neighbor and I get along pretty good. We don't agree on anything political so we don't discuss anything political. He and his wife and their children sit up front in church every Sunday. He likes to have an ice cold beer out in the backyard every now and then and share with me his latest scatological jokes and what he used to do to his girlfriends back in College. Real Charmer. However, he is very good to me and we helped each other immensely with hurricane cleanup - now that's christian and he didn't even have to go to Church to do it.

5. I can relate to that. New megachurch is almost next door!
Many attendees say that they´re a middle of the road church. Many Catholics do attend this non-denominational church. They opened saying to come as you are, they won´t judge you.

I attended and was quickly judged. Of course, I later judged them too, they´re not Christian. No Bibles, just a lot of singing to a rock band, a weak sermon, more singing, the collection plate more singing and we´re off . What a waste of time! The minister made a joke about Boulder--which many do since Boulder can be a little PC--but why did he have to do that in Church?

Saturday, December 10, at this church, the very anti-gay Marilyn Musgrave will "focus on what our priorities should be....being a Mary, not a Martha especially during this busy time of year."

In the story of Mary(not that Mary) and Martha, Jesus visits these two ladies and Martha fusses over household chores while Mary listens to Jesus. What a very interesting idea. Today, we watch as another Denver church fuss over costumes for Denver´s Parade of Lights which they had a hissy fit about last year because they couldn´t be in it.

You´d think that Christians wouldn´t like parades given that Jesus had one and the same people who attended on Sunday, were calling for him to be killed on Friday.

14. they get brownie points for getting outsiders to visit
and if they visit the church and like what they see, they get infinite brownie points for the new souls gathered into the fold!

17. Will they 'save' us as well?
the presumption that we need to attend the church of their choosing in order to be Christians is just a little to smug for me.

4. I'll pray for you, Boss.
:D

I couldn't agree more with your sentiment. I respect the moral teachings of Jesus for their humanity. Any time someone professes to be a follower of his, I hold them to the standards Jesus established. The old WWJD question should never lead one to a loud, boisterous, in-your-face, screech of "you're goin' to hell, you infidel!"

Jesus would be kicked out of, if not arrested at, virtually any Christian church in America he entered wearing his native garb and looking as he did when he walked the earth. SECURITY! They'd have him wrestled the ground and cuffed in any major church in the nation.

6. A line from one of my favorite church songs when I was younger...
"And they will know we are Christians by our love."
I have been lucky to know some Christians in my life who live their faith instead of preach it. They are charitable, compassionate, forgiving, non-judgmental, loving & tolerant.

9. That's what I think when ever I see Xian junk on backs of cars.
What is the need to tell the world what you believe in? If someone asks then OK but I hate in your face religion.

12. I always liked this part of the Sermon on the Mount
where Jesus said that your relationship with god should be private. It's one of the few parts of the bible that actually purports to use Jesus's own words.

The Model Prayer
"And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.
"Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

13. Jesus could not have been any clearer about that, could he?
And what do they do in his name?

Insist on starting every event in public with a prayer.

And yet, they'll tell you they follow what Jesus said.

18. Jimmy Carter vs Bush
who is a better role model for Christians? Remember, you can only use deeds to make your choice.
