5. Front-page news here in Egypt
The Egyptian Gazette had that item about al-Jazeera on the front page this week. (I've been working in Alexandria for over a month this time, and have spent several months this year in Cairo and Alexandria.)

The Gazette is one of the "official" Egyptian papers, controlled tightly by the government, AFAIK. That should give you a hint as to how seriously the Arab world is taking this story.

On a happier note, I spent today (Thanksgiving!) doing some touristy stuff, like exploring ancient Greek/Roman tombs.

My guide was a very well-educated young Muslim woman. She told me that last week, she helped out with a tour for over 1,000 Americans off of a Mediterranean cruise ship.

At one point, she said, they started a chant: "We hate Bush!"

Even that is mild compared to some of the Egyptians I've talked to. Their opinions range from blazing paranoia ("Bush wants to destory Islam!"). Down to the elegantly simple and classic expression I hear all over the place: "Bush no good!"

8. "Bush no good!"

The Islamic world needs to hear Americans saying that.

Heck, the world needs to hear it. :)

Peace.

20. Several Egyptians frequent the IRC channel
I spend much of my time refereeing, and those reactions are pretty typical. The reactions from our UK visitors are even more rabid, since the Blair bunch tried to shut that story down there (and failed miserably, from the look of things).

The overreaction by the Blair gang would seem to demonstrate that this plan was being seriously considered by the Bush/Blair coalition, and that is incredibly scary for a number of reasons.

6. GWB should do our country a favor
and step down. Our reputation in the World is at an all time low, and I find it hard to believe that he can be productive from here on out.

13. Unfortunately, like Reagan's comment on the Soviet Union, this...
...will become a non-event.

"My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."
