Expectations that the Bush administration would win a quick war against Saddam forces and terrorists have been dashed, fuelling agitations that the bloody war that has claimed the lives of more than 2,000 US troops should be redefined. Also under searchlight are the basis for the invasion that had ruptured the US relations with its strategic partners.

As the war to end all the wars against terrorists that struck the US on September 11, 2001, bogged down into a bottomless pit, Americans are mounting pressure on President Bush to balance the US book in Iraq.

The raging debate echoeing in the Congress last week was whether to begin a phased withdrawal of troops or retain them in Iraq until the terrorists are routed and democracy being planted develops a firm root.

The assault was spearheaded by Democrat senators who raised questions on the basis of the Bush administration policy that sent troops to invade Iraq. They doubted the intelligence report that formed the basis of the policy. The senators also demanded a timetable for the pull-out of the US troops.
