Sure, during the primaries I went and listened to him speak a few times. It was cool and all, he made me want to go out and change the world. However, I just looked out the window and that clown just shot my dog. (confession: I don't actually have a dog) Plus, I don't like how he always rolls his sleeves up and shows off his forearms. Why, I just don't know? But do I need to know why, I don't think so. Plus, I just don't like those educated elitist Northeasterners. I mean so he's a doctor, oh, cool, what's he trying to prove that he's better and smarter than the rest of us? (another confession: I like doctors, unless they kill cats when they are in medical school)

I also don't like the sneaky way he interjects populism into everything. Really, what's it his business if Bush is screwing everybody. Him and John Edwards should keep their mouths shut, so Tom DeLay and those other great Americans can do their jobs. (John Edwards, stay gold Ponyboy, stay gold)

I also heard Dean has skeletons in his closet. No really, literally skeletons. Dozens and dozens of unsolved murders in Vermont lead directly back to Dr. Dean. (actually they don't) So yeah, you heard it here first. Howard Dean kills dogs and people. This is just to make things even after my Wes Clark post the other day.

John Kerry stole candy from my kid again too. (I have no children....that I know of anyway....of course there was that time when I really dodged a bullet..nevermind)

I really did see him twice in person as I stated in the OP, and the guy is extremely likable, imho. He's a firebrand, very charismatic, you can't listen to his speeches and not feel like you want to go out and change the world. I think what makes him an effective leader is he knows how to work the grassroots and has a loyal following. Dean supporters would rather get tortured to death than to ever turn their back on the guy. And, that base, which consists of young people and regular joes, are out there fighting from the ground up to build our party into something. You got the Dean and Clark supporters who are all helping to revolutionize how and why the Democratic party runs itself. Then you have the strong Dems who aren't necessarily aligned with either man, but who truly believe in the party who are all energized by this. John Edwards is a guy who caught on quite a bit too, with his populism and so on. So you are seeing something big happen here and Howard Dean has a lot to do with it. And, for the record, I am neither a Dean or a Clark voter, however I do like both men quite a lot.

the way he entered the Senate race (declaring that he wasn't going to run then running three days after Hackett declared). I know it sounds corny, but it smacks of dishonor and that bothers me.

He screwed up there. There are a few things about Hackett I would be unsure of if I was an Ohio voter. No track record, for one thing. He's been using the "Liberal" word on Brown in a way that jerks my chain. Some of his Iraq war positions were a little iffy, but he's done well in clearing that all up. He's evolved his opinion on it over time and I can see how he can come to the conclusions that he has etc. But, I think Hackett is the real deal. He's got "IT", so we'll just see how well this all unfolds in the next year. I hope they don't bloody each other up too much, so that the winner is damaged goods in the general election. DeWine is ripe for the picking and Dems would blow a major opportunity if the primary becomes a bitter war.

If only he wasn't so careful about telling the truth in a way that people and the media can hear it, he might actually be good for the Democratic Party and its goals.

I remember. It was the moment my memory first had a true purpose, for how can the heart forget the gifts it receives once it opens itself?

Halsted Street, Chicago. A cold Midwest night. A wet snow fell. A sharp wind swept its way from the lake, down Belmont, and sought me out as I hurried north on Halsted to my assignation.

He stood above me like a god. The only kind of god a lost and filthy soul such as myself can worship. He stood planted firmly before me, his sturdy and practical wing-tips looked to me a black shining pedestal. He spoke words that roused me, words I longed for many years to hear.

As I stared up into his eyes glistening with passion, the same fire of passion rose within me.

A passion that I usually reserved for pizza, I now was yielding up to the persuasive come-ons of this ruddy beast glowing with a heated power beyond the ordinary.

My heart cried out "YEEEAARRRRGGGHH!", like a pirate finding his treasure.

We took pictures. It cost me fifty bucks, and it was well worth it.

Seriously. Dean was the first Presidential candidate to campaign in a gay bar. Sidetrack, in Chicago. I stood in front of him during the speech and it cost $50. I spoke to him briefly about 9/11 and the Jersey Girls after he spoke.

And as is my usual luck, I met a very nice WOMAN at the bar that night. :-) Not that there's anything wrong with that...
