"I believe people are BORN.... left-handed."
I just caught the Colbert Report repeat showing his interview with a Gay man in which his satire basically equated being Gay with being left-handed.

The brilliance of the spot was the implication that persecuting someone for being Gay is just as ridiculous as persecuting someone for being left-handed.

What really drives this home (for me) is that at one time Religious Fundamentalists in America actually DID persecute people who were left-handed. At one time, being left-handed was thought to be a "mark of the Devil", and left-handed children were forced to try and become right-handed.

Today, not even the most fervent Fundamentalist thinks persecuting someone for being left-handed is ridiculous.

Someday, the Fundies will realize that being Gay is just as natural as being left-handed. Until then, it wouldn't hurt to keep on reminding them of their past mistakes.

1. Proud to be Lefty !!!
People are always blown away when I tell them I'm left handed. What's the big deal, fer cryin' in the beer? In 100 years, society will FINALLY accept that being gay is as normal as being left handed, right handed or a Bush hater!

2. Eggactly..I am left handed..and there is a book "The Sinister People"
Being left handed used to be considered evil, my grandfather was forced to give up his left handedness..and I am sure my experience in my Catholic school was clouded because I was left handed...and of course wanting to be the class clown had its problems also!

9. Hey! Don't dis Class Clowns!
I was a Class Clown, too! But I'm right-handed (thank God!). But I chose to be Class Clown.

Wait a minute, now that I think about it, I never really decided to be a Class Clown - the teacher would say something stupid, and I couldn't help myself... I just had to speak up! Despite the detentions and Parent conferences, I still couldn't stop myself from pointing out stupidity!

OMG! A break-through!

4. Was raised by righty people...
Edited on Mon Oct-31-05 09:23 PM by cynatnite
I'm still a lefty. Teacher tried to make me a righty...didn't work.

I'm a prime example of a lefty being around righty people all the time and not turning righty.

Nothing can make me a righty. :)

on edit: Colbert stole the idea from me since I did it first ;) check it out.

6. Maybe Colbert reads DU! If so, he should give you credit...
I can't believe you're still a Lefty. Are you sure you've prayed enough about this?

7. The "born that way" /"chose to be that way" should be moot.
Who an adult has sex with should be the business only of the participants as long as it's by mutual consent. The reason they are attracted to each other is irrelevant.

8. Yes, even when being gay is a choice, I would support it
But I do think most gay people are born that way. (As you said, so what? BFD.)

14. I always ask RWer's if they made a choice to be straight...
or were they born that way. It gets them every time.

10. That's a very good point! For the party that says Government
should leave us alone, they sure want to stick their noses in a lot of personal business.

12. I was born a righty, but an older more experienced lefty seduced me...
... and converted me. Now I am a lefty because I get a rush out of knowing I am breaking a taboo. I don't care what my family or society thinks about me.

Oooo... it feels good to be a dirty lefty.

13. That was Barney Frank he was interviewing--
the openly gay congressman from Mass.

I didn't catch the last question Colbert flipped at him-- just heard Barney's reply that the question was "too silly" for him to answer. Anyone?

15. That is a great analogy. Cause at one time lefties had to write with
their right. And it was horrid & traumatizing for them. How could you learn when you were doing something in a way god didn't make you?

16. One of my sons
a brother, a cousin, and a granddaughter are all left handed, and it would never have occurred to anybody in the family to try to get them to switch to their right hands. It would have been silly. I admire lefties, because face it, most things are designed for right handed people, and they have always had to adapt. They are a lot more talented than I am.
