Miers statement from DNC
The radical right wing of the Republican Party killed the Harriet Miers
nomination. Apparently, Ms. Miers did not satisfy those who want to
pack the Supreme Court with rigid ideologues.

The only voices heard in this process were those of the far right; Ms.
Miers wasn't even given a chance to speak for herself before the Senate
Judiciary Committee. The President should listen to all Americans, not
just extreme elements of his own party.

Ms. Miers was the managing partner of a major Texas law firm and the
first woman president of the Texas Bar Association. In those roles she
was a strong supporter of law firm diversity policies and a leader in
promoting legal services for the poor. These credentials are not good
enough for the right wing extremists: they want a nominee with a proven
record of supporting their skewed goals.

In choosing a replacement for Ms. Miers, President Bush should not
reward the bad behavior of his right wing base. He should reject the
demands of a few extremists and choose a justice who will protect the
constitutional rights of all Americans.

1. Good for the DNC
They are correct. Even some members of the GOP old guard are worried about the hold of religious extremists-Former Sen. Danforth said so in remarks made either this morning or yesterday-heard it on KSMU (Springfield MO) this morning.

2. Another great PR release from the office of Dr. Dean
First he hits the 'working families' meme which unites all of the Democratic base, and then he hits the 'radical right wing' meme which isolates the Republican Party to its freeper-fundy minority. They need to keep pounding these themes, pound them without mercy.

3. I like the letter
It sounds gracious and it lays the blame at the feet of the American Taliban and their rabid supporters. It's good to get out front of this issue with a letter like this. It has all the necessary talking points. Ms. Meirs was denied an "Up-or-down vote" which is what the pukies keep screaming that we deny.

4. Remember the GOP's plaintive cry for an up or down vote on all noms?
