I love getting e-mails from my uninformed, Republican friends.
I got the following last night from a guy who i've know for 20 years. We've had some heated discussions on politics.....he's not the sharpest tool in the shed and he's been swilling the kool aid forever. Anyway, he sends this to me last night and copies about 30 other people. I know this was written for my benefit, so I thought, what the hey, let's respond with superior firepower. I never pass up an opportunity to educate...I present the following for your reading enjoyment (unedited, except for names)-

----------------------------------------------------

Gentlemen,

So much has been said about the U.S.A. in terms of the intervention into other countries, lack of respect, and the general War Mongers the U.S.A.has been accused of being.

If you had the stomach to watch the movie,(I'm sure some have)"Black Hawk Down", one might get another perspective of what the guys that fight for the U.S.A. do in the 'Special Forces' , and especially working without what is needed, by what is requested by the commander in charge. Bye the bye, this happened in 1994 to give you the timeframe of the government calling the shots. This movie is based on facts and not theories like, lets say, 911!

Just some food for thought when knocking the Stars and Stripes.....I am tied of the U.S.A. for "being there for every country that has a problem".

What we are involved in today, is a different story. And No, I don't agree with the reason of the approach. I do agree with fighting those Fantastic Muslims on their own tuff! It at least keeps them from the borders of the U.S.A.

Just my opinion for the day!

------------------------------------------------------------

Actually N___, the US intervention of Somalia occurred in December, 1992....just as GHW Bush was heading out the door. This was an action on behalf of the UN to provide security for a humanitarian relief operation to distribute food in a country decimated by a civil war that killed 300,000 people in the early 90's. Clinton started to wind down the US commitment, in May; then there was a masacare of a UN Pakistani contingent in June and we started to go after the local warloard responsible for the civil war...a criminal named Aidid. Special Forces were sent in to find this dude and over the next few months the conflicts escalated, culminating in the Mogadishu firefight in October. Clinton realized the folly of trying to fight a police action in an urban setting using US troops and started the withdrawal a few days later. What that action and Iraq have in common, I'm sure I couldn't tell you. Except maybe that George should have been paying attention to the lesson learned there, instead of enriching himself by shortselling stock in Harken Oil.

I don't understand this statement: "This movie is based on facts and not theories like, lets say, 911! " Are you saying 9/11 is a theory??? I know we haven't had a real investigation into what happened on 9/11/01, but I assure you there's nothing theoretical about that attack.

Here's a fact. 15/19 alledged hi-jackers were from Saudi Arabia. How did we punish Saudi Arabia? We-
(1) Took out their secular neighbor and #1 threat, Saddam Hussein.
(2) Exited the military bases in that country.
(3) Have kept the Iraqi Oil off the market, marking a hellava lot more money for the House of Saud.
(4) Defended the Saudi's against a $ billion dollar lawsuit brought by the families of victims of 9/11. Well, we didn't....James Baker, the Bush Family fixer, did.

BTW, you do know the the House of Bush has profited mightily by their association with Saudi Arabia...something like $1.5BB? And both Junior and Senior have done business with the bin Laden family, through Carlyle Group? Hell, the bin Ladens financed George the Lessor's 1st business, Arbusto. (The one that went busto). Oh yeah, where's Osama? He's "bin Forgotten".

So why did we invade Iraq? They've never initiated a terrorist act or declared war against the USA. Oh yeah, because of those weapons of mass destruction that weren't there. And this administration was so concerned about WMD, that they outed a CIA agent who was responsible for tracking purchases of nuclear components/weapons by terrorists. Hmmmm. George H.W. Bush, April 16th, 1999: "I have nothing but contempt and anger for those who betray the trust by exposing the name of our sources. They are, in my view, the most insidious of traitors." Sr. fired Karl Rove once from his administration, I wonder what he thinks oh his son covering for a traitor? Actually, I think Rove is blackmailing W....young George had 2 years to find out who outed the NOC and he didn't do anything.

Knocking the Stars and Stripes? I'm leaving that to the AWOL pResident and the war criminals/profiteers who infest this administration. We've killed over 100,000 Iraqi's since our latest invasion/occupation. We've shed the blood of 1800 American lives, 10,000+ casualties...and this Republican Congress is cutting veteran's benefits and sending them into battle without the proper equipment. But somehow, they managed to lose $8BB of money, unaccounted for, in Iraq. Not including the $170BB spent to date. You think I use war profiteers lightly? Educate yourself on Dick "5 deferments" Cheney. Explain to me why it was OK for his company to sell oil drilling equipment to Iraq in the 90s against the US embargo? Or why he was doing business with Iran? Or why Halliburton was selling dual use components for making WMD to Pakistan in the 90s? Hellofa racket he's got going. When he's in government, he's feeding the war machine to destroy countries. When he's out of government he's in the rebuilding business. When he's back in government, it's deconstruction time again. Seems to be the new Republican business model. Don't believe me? Read this: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=103x66773 "AMERICAN JUDAS Selling the Security of America and the World for 30 Pieces of Silver" It's all there....this is why Valerie Plame had to be outed.

No, these are the people you ought to be pissed at. The ones who never answered their country's call to service when it was their time {Nixon, Hannity, Limbaugh, Reagan, Cheney, DeLay, Santorum, Frist, Bush (skipping wars, playing pilot, don't count))....but who seem more than willing to send our sons and daughters to fight wars that weren't necessary. Why is it that those who know the true hell of war are those that look for ways to avoid it? You know, people like George McGovern, Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, John Kerry, Wesley Clarke.

Dimson (sorry, George W. Bush) is killing this country and you don't get it. He's made our military weaker....enlistments down, the Iraqi vets are turning against this pResident. The US cannot win this war, we can only decide the magnitude of the loss. By incompetently applying force, he has exposed our tactical and strategic weaknesses to the world. There was a reason why Poppy didn't go into Bagdhad in DS1....again, too bad George wasn't paying attention. Most of the world has turned against us because of this illegal and immoral invasion and occupation. Compare Bush to Clinton.....not one man was lost in action he committed them to (remember, Somalia was Bush Srs decision) and yet, through diplomacy and his charismatic appeal, the US and the world enjoyed 8 relatively properous years. Thank God that awful era of Peace and Prosperity are finally over!

Don't kid yourself about fighting those fantastic Moslems on their own turf....they encompass 1/5 of the worlds population and are on every continent. What we've done is light the fuse and set the conditions for a radical pan-Islamic ME Caliphate. Our ex-CIA asset Osama bin Laden couldn't be happier with this administration's mis-steps. Most sane people saw this coming....we knocked the moderate, secular state of Iraq firmly into the arms of Iran (Shia Moslems) and Saudi Arabia (Sunni Moslems). We've given religious fundies the upper hand to demonize us and marginalize the voice of moderation in those countries. Of course, we have our own RW religious fundies who are trying to radicalize our country now. What's really scary is that they own the voting machines (ES&S, Diebold, and Sequioa).....and we may never again have control of our country.

But, hey, wave Old Glory, watch those romantic war movies, and keep believing what Fox News / Bill O'Reilly / Rush Limbaugh (do you really think he gets paid $20MM+/year to tell the truth?) and the rest of the corporate media keep telling you....they are counting on you to keep voting against your best interests.

Just my opinion for the day, too.

4. I have a cousin who keeps sending garbage
like "I'm proud to be a Republican" and "thank God for President Bush" - the usual KoolAid-soaked stuff. I don't even bother to read it anymore - all e-mails from him go straight into the trash, to be deleted when I log off.

Some people just won't be told, and will never believe, anything bad about the Shrub - he's the Second Coming and don't you damn well forget it !!!

You. Are. My. Hero.

THAT WAS AMAZING!!

Many of us get emails like this and we just scoff and delete. You took the time to write a very eloquent, highly insightful and accurate retort.

Absolutely fabulous. You did "reply all", correct? If so, I hope you'll keep us abreast of the reactions you receive from the recipients.

Your deep knowledge of the facts is mind blowing.

I hope you also write LTTE from time to time, as well!

Thanks for taking the time to respond to your neocon friend.

11. I did cc the entire list.
The few I recognized are his family and close friends that share his opinions, more or less. I'm wondering what kind of return fire I'll take, though....I've done this before and it can grow out of control. I had to kill one e-mail address because of the amplification it got. I was getting 10 responses a day, mostly negative, a few years back right after 9/11. It'll be interesting to see if this gets the same response. I hope not.

I can't wait to hear his response.

This notion of "fighting them on their own turf" or "fight over there so they don't fight here" excuse for Invading Iraq bothers me. They are saying on one hand (excuse for invasion #4) that we were liberating the poor citizens of Iraq--protecting them from the evil ruler. While on the other hand they suggest that we went to Iraq to draw the terrorists out, using the Iraq citizens as shields, as bait, allowing them to be in the line of fire rather than our own citizens. Makes no sense, and yet it is continually touted as a justification for the invasion.

16. It also implies that US infantry and Marines are walking targets
whose function is to draw enemy fire and then grease the insurgents when they stick their heads out of their hidey-holes. Which is pretty much the same strategy that got 58,000 Americans killed in Vietnam (search and destroy). No wonder enlistment is down.

18. Absolutely correct.
What's interesting is my acquaintence couldn't serve in 'Nam, as much as he wanted to, due to a pre-existing medical condition (asthma....smokes like a chimney, though). But he has 2 healthy sons and a daughter that are well within the age to enlist. I was going to ask him why he's not getting them to enlist in that e-mail, but I'm waiting for his expected lame response to lay that one on him.

Ask him why it's okay for a bunch of reservists (including grey-haired grandpas and women with little kids) to get their legs blown off in Iraq, but his own thoroughly able-bodied sons are too precious to fight for the cause he allegedly believes in. Or does he think the War on Terror can be won by sending illiterate emails? The only worry is that he may take the bait and actually talk them into joining--something I wouldn't wish on anybody right now.

But I'm sure you know that facts generally fall on deaf ears when dealing with these types. Such a shame. They could learn so much.

When he says that it's not based on theories like 9/11 I think he's referring to "Fahrenheit 9/11" - comparing movie to movie.

31. I'm pretty sure you are correct about the reference.
I was busting his chops for a badly structured sentence and it gave me an opening to make the point about the 9/11 Whitewash.

I haven't asked him, but I'm curious to see if he's seen F/911. I think he has and it's obviously bugged him. Fascinating to see how easily influenced a person can be by a romanticized framing of a battle "Black Hawk Down" or a war "Green Berets". The medium can have a very powerful effect on the viewer who is predisposed to heroic messages and symbols. Or disturbed by documentary whose message is diametrical opposed to your worldview. It's as welcome as a turd in a punchbowl.

Shred-

Great response. Naturally a lot of thought and research went into it. I suspect, unfortunately, that Mr. X probably read the first two sentences and then got so darned mad that his head spun around two or three times because YOU JUST DO NOT GET IT!

You are obviously "Angry and adrift." You have "No core." You "Hate America."

I also have the odd sensation that your "friend" has one of those magnetic "Support Our Troops" ribbons proudly displayed on the rear end of his Chevy Suburban, right next to that fish emblem and the decal of Calvin taking a piss.

Shred, as you know I write editorials and I found myself caught up in the vernacular used in the email sent to you by Mr. X. and the astounding amount of misinformation he included as fodder for your reply. (Not to mention the 4th grade sentence structure and spelling. Sorry to all 4th graders reading this post.)

Finally, Dearest Shred -

My question is this: Why do you keep your republican friends in your circle of pals? I had to eliminate them, Libertarian's are a close call - one of them is already gone. I just don't have the stomach for their "talking points" spoon fed to them by the right-wing-nut-jobs.

As Always,
Gilligan

32. Truth be known, he's more than a friend.
He actually works for me. We worked in a company for 16 years together. I started a business in 2000 with another guy who also worked for the same company. My partner, being the CEO, and unbeknownst to me, hired my "friend" when he got laid off at the same time we left. He wasn't particularly creative or entreprenaurial...certainly can't think quick on his feet. But he has some redeeming values for doing the back office stuff that we needed at the time.

So, while he gets to play a Conservative Republican, he's beholden to two Liberal Democrats that pay his salary. I'm sure that bugs the shit out of him, too.

He is gullable, though. He's the kind of person that confidence people love. He's carried his convictions as a badge of honor for as long as I've known him. Trouble is, it's people like him who don't realize what a horrible mess his political choices are leaving to his kids and grand-children. He thinks he's a Republican, but if you ask him why....he doesn't really have a clue.

He's read the authorized autobiographies of Nixon, Reagun, Bush(1), ...probably W's "A Charge to Keep", too. He seems to think those are factual presentations of his hero's.

This is 40+ years of a carefully crafted illusion we are confronted with here. If he ever "gets it", it may be enough to drive him over the edge.

63. 3rd Response
"Well, some of what you say is true, but I think you miss N_______'s whole point of the e-mail. We've always been the country willing to go to bat for democracy andwe end up being painted the bad guys by the world's socialist press. You, and people who think like you, need to get more balance in your thinking about our government. Democrats seem to think our government is evil, but how much of it is because they no longer run things in Washington?"

1-1-1, no UFO sitings.....

47. One tiny nit pick
Nixon served in the Navy during World War II. Otherwise it's a great piece of work. Oh, hell, it's a great piece anyway.

52. I sorta new that....
I don't think he saw any action, though. Reserves, maybe?

If they want to pick that nit, I'll mention that I remember RMN was also a protege of Prescott Bush, the guy who did investment banking for Nazi Germany. A really small world for these people....

LOL, you just know they will jump on that to discredit the whole piece, too.

53. He was an officer in the Naval Reserve
as were all officers who were not regular Navy. He joined as a Lt. jg, and ultimately was promoted to Lt. Commander, and to full Commander on his discharge from the reserves. He saw no combat, serving most of his time in the states, although he did serve on Guadalcanal for a time in 1943 in an administrative position. His main claim to fame in the Navy was his poker playing ability. He reportedly came out of the service with about $10,000 in winnings; an enormous sum in the mid 1940's.

48. This should be required reading for ALL DUers. AND it should be
a template for others who get this kind of email crap to be able to respond - AND DEBUNK. VERY important. VERY superb.

I'm glad you're not letting them get the last word. ALWAYS respond to this shit. ALWAYS. Never let it go unchallenged or unquestioned. If you do, the sender will then:

1) assume he or she was correct.
2) smirk that he or she has another one of those "looney liberal" friends who can't come up with a decent response - maybe because there isn't one, or is just another one of those mild-mannered apathetic folks who are just begging to get rolled - AGAIN.
3) decide that he or she maybe ought not to send you any more of those emails. Probably won't appreciate getting any response (because he or she thinks the original is correct and SHOULDN'T be questioned). Like, man, who needs the grief?
4) maybe, JUST maybe, take the time to read some of your response, and start thinking... (maybe, JUST maybe, the sender hasn't even heard the other side, and assumes out of habit and laziness and complacency that there just simply ISN'T one).

If #4 is the answer, you may wind up with a convert - a soul you've saved from the dark side. If nothing else, you'll free your email bin from trash like this - which has happened in my case.

51. Kind words....thanks to all that have posted on this thread.
I was bit ticked off when I received it. Not because it was really personally insulting, but because there was such a lack of factual data to support his opinions. We can no longer let this stuff slide. I did it in the 80s/90s and I regret not challenging the conventional wisdom/talking points of the corporate media that became the de facto, politically correct positions for everyone to accept. The advent of the Internet as a medium to learn and participate has changed my attitude about my politics (and I was a PoliSci major in the 70s).

We can no longer give lazy or unfounded bloviators a free reign to dumb us down nationally. The more we hit back with the facts, the quicker we are going to start changing the national dialogue about the issues.

57. Excellent response, but I'm afraid it was wasted.
Your friend will read the first few lines, splutter indignantly, then slither back under the veneer of the "Rah rah USA!" Republican standard.

That is, if he can read at all.

59. Brilliant! And think of all you left out because you didn't have the room.
It's hard to keep up with all the idiocy, immorality and incompetence of this administration and their complicit cronies.

But excellent encapsulation, nonetheless.
