Help - Need Accurate Abortion Statistics!
Edited on Mon May-23-05 08:58 AM by demwing
I have two questions, the first concerns the amount--or percentage--of dilation and extractions, otherwise known as PBAs, or Partial Birth Abortions. The second concerns the overall number of all abortions performed at any stage.

1. I've read that in 1997, the Alan Guttmacher Institute released a study indicating that less than 1% of abortions are performed at 21 weeks plus.

http://www.lifeandlibertyforwomen.org/issues/issues_partial_birth_abortions.html

I've also read that another study, performed four years later by the same AGI shows the D&E procedure had more than tripled, calling into question the validity of the first study, the second study, or both.

http://www.washtimes.com/op-ed/20031103-100448-5951r.htm

Does anyone have statistical information on D&E that does NOT come from the AGI?

2. The AGI also reports the number of abortions performed each year is on a decade long decline.

http://www.agi-usa.org/media/nr/2005/05/19/index.html

This is in contrast to what we commonly hear, which is that under Bush, abortions have gone up. Again, does anyone have statistics that do not come from the AGI?

thanks

1. Outta time , but quickly ...
Unfortunately, the studies only go back to 1996 ( I think, anyway) so it’s very hard to get a concrete picture of how abortion goes up with economic despair. But it does.
I gotta run …

I did just see these statistics:

Abortion Violence Statistics - Pro-Life, Pro-Choice and General Stats
Pro-Life Violence
The National Abortion Federation (NAF) has been keeping track of violence against abortion providers. Their findings include:
Abortion Provider Violence Statistics:
7 Murders
17 Attempted Murders
41 Bombings
168 Arsons
82 Attempted Bombings/Arsons
373 Invasions
1048 Incidences of Vandalism
591 Incidences of Trespassing
125 Incidences of Assault and Battery
357 Death Threats
3 Kidnappings
76 Incidences of Burglary
Abortion Provider Disruption Statistics:
9790 Incidences of Hate Mail/Calls
578 Bomb Threats
68886 Incidences of Picketing
Abortion Provider Clinic Blockades:

You might want to post this in the Reproductive Freedom Forum here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=217

And try the usual ACLU, NARAL and Planned Parenthood.

2. From an Andrew Sullivan article;

(Sorry, don't have a link anymore.)

"Or take abortion. America is one of the few Western countries where the legality of abortion is still ferociously disputed. It's a country where the religious right is arguably the strongest single voting bloc, and in which abortion is a constant feature of cultural politics. Compare it to a country like Holland, perhaps the epitome of socially liberal, relativist liberalism. So which country has the highest rate of abortion? It's not even close. America has an abortion rate of 21 abortions per 1,000 women aged between 15 and 44. Holland has a rate of 6.8. Americans, in other words, have three times as many abortions as the Dutch. Remind me again: which country is the most socially conservative?"

On edit: it's at www.andrewsullivan.com

3. I believe Holland also has a higher standard of living
than the US, and a higher tax rate.
