It's official. Just in from the folks at Conyer's office...Fighting on every front...God bless him...In the DC area next week? Go help 'em make some noise!

Better yet, write to C-SPAN today and ask them to cover this event!!! We spoke with Conyers' office earlier this morning, and they made it clear they would appreciate any help that "6 or 7" of you might be able to provide in encouraging C-SPAN to be there!

FROM THE NEWSWEEK CONTROVERSY TO THE DOWNING STREET MEMO, CONYERS HOSTS FORUM: "MEDIA BIAS AND THE FUTURE OF FREEDOM OF THE PRESS"

WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Tuesday, May 24, at 1 p.m., Rep. John Conyers, Jr. and other Members will host a forum concerning the state of the freedom of the press in this country.

There are few liberties which are more precious to our citizenry or important to our democracy than a free and independent press. Unfortunately, in the present environment, the fourth estate appears reticent to cover numerous issues of genuine public import, and has frequently retreated in the face of criticism and threats from government officials.

For example, the mainstream media has largely ignored the implications of the "Downing Street Memo," which points to a secret agreement between the Bush and Blair Administration to not only go to war, but create the conditions necessary for the war. Similarly, in the wake of the Newsweek "retraction" of the Koran story, the Administration has sought to mandate that the magazine alter its coverage of our involvement in the Middle East.

Tuesday's Forum will provide a timely opportunity to assess the nature of media bias and the extent that press freedoms are at risk in the post-9/11 world.

Dear C-Span, Please cover the forum Representative Conyers is hosting regarding the press in our country. I used to watch C-Span all the time, but since the election ..the callers, and the lies have gotten too much for me, and I can't listen to it anymore. Mr. Conyers is one of a handful of government officials with integrity and class, and I am very interested in what he and the panel he has put together have to say. Please let me see a glimmer of hope that democracy may yet prevail. Thank you....

8. He is beyond awesome. Whatever his secret, I hope we all grow up to be

like him. Then we'd have a whole nation of heroes!

I suspect he has a lot of willing, enthusiastic helpers who have organized so that he can be as efficient as possible in all the things he does. But he is ALWAYS there, always working, even with the help.

Yes, he would be the most wonderful President imaginable. He would reassure the nation and the world and go about making things better in every way.

The good thing about a Conyers group would be that it would serve as a resource for keeping straight all the things he's involved in and organizing the most effective kinds of activism to support his effors. It wouldn't be very useful to communicate with DU as a whole, since the posts would be basically invisible outside the group and most people wouldn't check it very often if ever.

25. I find it amazing important issues such as this hardly get a response

but look at every thread title bashing a fellow Dem. and the post count quickly climbs into the hundreds.

Where is the priority? Where is the activism? What more do people wish for then to have Conyers hold a well cast forum such as this?

Perhaps many within our party need to understand what is need for effective change to take place.

26. I think that part of the explanation is that we feel such frustration and

have so few outlets for it. Here we can complain and - wonder! - have our opinions validated and respected by other people. It's a relief to vent and to feel less isolated.

And a lot of people haven't yet made the transition into thinking that there ARE things that they can do that will actually make a difference. Part of the psyops war the neocons have been imposing on us is the framing that we are wimps and losers and their victory is inevitable.

So we just keep at it. I do my share of venting too. I think Skinner and the others were very wise to set up DU with a Lounge, but it also comes out elsewhere. It's a useful function - a place for venting - but it can get frustrating when ACTIONS and PLANNING and BRAINSTORMING seem to get short shrift sometimes.

I'll probably repost this thread again later so it has another chance to get to the Greatest Page and be seen. When I do, I'll post a link to the new thread here. Any support in keeping it kicked and visible is welcome.

Thanks for your kind words. We've already collected at least a dozen, maybe a lot more emails for Conyers' coverage. A lot of people read without posting. We'll just keep at it.

This weekend I even emailed some 'fundies' I know. I gave em all I've got: the downing street memo, the Calvin College protests, the advertisement.

Sometimes, we have to take a stand just like we demand of the dems but we can do it in a polite-caring way. And hope they will take the message to heart.
