PLEASE VISIT John Conyers Blog re: The Downing St Memo
He has written twice this evening, and I think it's important to give him all the support he needs.

His first comment this evening: http://www.conyersblog.us/

Working Hard to Draw Attention to Bush\Blair Lies

I continue in my quest to bring the secret deal agreed to by Bush and Blair to go to war in Iraq before they bothered to ask for permission. Today, I am happy to report that the Chicago Tribune picked up the story, written by the same writers who penned the earlier Knight-Ridder piece -- Warren Strobel and John Wolcott. Also, I took the issue to the radio airwaves. I was on Radio Pacifica National News, the Ed Schultz Show (at 1:40 PM ET), and the Tony Trupiano show (local in Detroit area). I would appreciate any support you can give me in bringing this important issue to the attention of your local media outlets as well. More to come on this shortly...

I also expect the issue to come up in my live on-line chat with Louise Slaughter tomorrow from 3-4 PM ET. See you there.

Blogged by JC on 05.09.05 @ 10:22 PM ET

my emphasis

Although he doesn't mention it in the 2 comments he posted, he said on the Ed Schultz show today that he has every intention of going to the UK, if necessary, to conduct an investigation of his own.

GOD, but I LOVE THIS GUY!!

And maybe, just maybe, we have our Woodward & Bernstein in Strobel & Wolcott?

5. A trip to London
by JC could be framed by his office as one of a very concerned Congressman looking for answers to an new and potentially explosive issue that is very disturbing b/c the story is pretty much dead here. It could be made clear that he feels it is his duty to go since the press and the agencies that should be all over this aren't doing their jobs by following up on this shocking information.
That should generate headlines for him and the story. Even if the tone took on a mocking or eye-rolling nature ("Does this guy think he's Shelock Holmes? Ha Ha Ha!" I can almost predict Tweetie's script...), it would still raise questions - especially from the average Joe who is getting mighty uncomfortable with this war and its cost in dollars and lives. Maybe the biggest would be, "What's this about? Why haven't I heard of this before now?"
I'd love to see the press turn on itself and have a feeding frenzy - a la runaway bride - about who ignored this the most. What a pleasure that would be to witness !!

I so COMPLETELY agree.

I'd give my eye teeth to embarrass *, et al. into RESIGNING. Screw the conviction, though I'd LOVE that as well.

15. Would be lovely, but the blivet** is UNEMBARASSABLE. He isn't right in
the head, I think - he NEVER accepts accountability for anything whatsoever. Add that to his long vacations and 9 PM beddie-bye time, and you see the sort of protected-from-reality kind of life he lives.

But it's a nice thought.

7. note he is 'up' on referring to the 'corporate media'
Edited on Tue May-10-05 12:58 AM by cosmicdot
"On talk radio today, and on the Internet, there is a palpable
frustration about the lack of mainstream media (or as many
appropriately call it, "corporate media") coverage of the secret
Downing Street memo. I share this frustration. In my view, it is
inexcusable that the cable news networks and the major newspapers
have failed thus far to give this story the attention it deserves."

8. great write up in Atlanta, too

Atlanta Journal/Constitution
http://www.ajc.com/opinion/content/opinion/bookman/2005/050905.html

*The primary document is an internal summary of a meeting held on July 23, 2002, by British Prime Minister Tony Blair and a handful of his top foreign policy, intelligence and military advisers. At that point, most Americans had no idea that a war with Iraq was even being considered, but apparently, Blair and President Bush had agreed to invade Iraq as far back as an April 2002 meeting in Crawford, Texas.

In the July meeting, Blair and his aides discussed the Americans' plan to create an international crisis around Iraq and its weapons of mass destruction. The idea was to set the stage for war by demanding that Saddam Hussein re-admit U.N. weapons inspectors; when Saddam refused, that would be the excuse to invade.

However, as British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw told Blair in that July meeting, "The case is thin. Saddam was not threatening his neighbors, and his WMD capability was less than that of Libya, North Korea or Iran."

Blair was also told that the "most likely timing in U.S. minds for military action to begin was January, with the timeline beginning 30 days before the U.S. congressional elections."

That description is damning, indicating that the Bush administration cynically manipulated its war plans to create maximum political advantage for Republican congressional candidates.

The document's most devastating paragraph, however, summarizes a report by the head of British intelligence, known as "C." "C" has just returned from meetings in Washington, and he's telling Blair what he learned there:

"Bush wanted to remove Saddam through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD," "C" tells Blair. "But the intelligence and the facts were being fixed around the policy. . . . There was little discussion in Washington of the aftermath after military action."

The intelligence was being fixed . . . Little discussion of the aftermath. Amazing.

So yes, a nation can be fooled into war by its own leaders. We've learned that much. But unless that war is short and successful, there's a price to be paid.

In this case, what began as an optional war has morphed into a war of great importance. But now, when our leaders tell us that, fewer Americans believe them, and fewer still are willing to die for it.

PLEASE, people, give this guy your support!!!

Call your own congressperson and demand that he/she join Conyers' campaign. Then, once you've done that, CALL SOMEBODY ELSE'S CONGRESSPERSON and demand the same thing. Democrat OR republi-CON. Doesn't matter. DO IT ANYWAY. Even if they're the enemy. They still need to know you're out there breathing down their necks, and that you KNOW - that there's one less constituent in their neighborhood who is NOT fooled and can't be suckered, and who's ONTO THEM. Those on the Dark Side need to know this.

DO IT ANYWAY.

FUCK IT. EVEN IF YOU DON'T THINK IT'LL MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE - DO IT ANYWAY. How do you know that YOUR call won't be THE one that finally breaks the camel's back and pushes a wavering (or closeted) Republican moderate over into The Light?

DO IT ANYWAY. John Conyers needs our support.

Then, write a LTTE. Or call your local TV or radio station or newspaper. Or send an email. DO SOMETHING. Call the CNN comment line (404) 827 - 0234 and then press 8 to bypass the long recorded message. Ask why they're not covering this.

JOHN CONYERS and friends need our support, guys.

ANYTHING you do is better than doing nothing, and allowing discouragement to get the better of you.

13. Conyers could be successful in getting this story out...
...if more Democrats would join him in his effort. Only then can something actually be done about it through the 'justice' system or congressional hearings.

But Conyers is faced with the same problem our country has faced from the beginning of the 'war'. Many Democrats support Bush's war and don't want to see this story exposed any more than the Bushies. You won't seem THEM showing up to work with Conyers to get the truth out to the American people and the rest of the world.
