--

WASHINGTON — Maine Sen. Susan Collins finds herself at the center of a political maelstrom as a pivotal vote in the fight to end unlimited Senate debate on judicial nominees. Collins, a Republican who is still forming a position on the filibuster issue, has received thousands of calls and been the target of TV and newspaper ads.

She says she believes every nominee for the federal courts deserves an up-or-down vote, but is reluctant to abandon the filibuster for nominees entirely.

"I think that filibusters against judicial nominees should be very, very rare events," Collins said Tuesday. "I think the Democrats have overused the filibuster and that that has been unfair. . . . Having said that, I would be reluctant to forever give up my right to filibuster."

Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, is expected to oppose a rule change that would end filibusters for judicial nominees. Maine's senators are central to the filibuster rule change because the 55 Republicans in the 100-member Senate have enough numbers to win majority votes, but they don't have the 60 votes needed to cut off debate, or end a filibuster.
