Sen. Isakson (R-GA) Pimped Filibuster on Senate Floor....Check this out!

From The Swing State Project:

File this under, priceless.

Senator Isakson on the floor of the United States Senate extolling the virtues of the filibuster to protect the rights of the minority from being overrun by the majority.

"Don't you fear that the Shi'ites inevitably being in the majority, that you will be overrun? And he says, 'oh no, we have a secret weapon.' Mr. President, this is a Kurdish leader, in the middle of Iraq in the 21st century who said he had a secret weapon. And when asked what it was, he said one word, 'filibuster'" <...>

"It is one of their minority leaders, proudly stating one of the pillars and principles of our government, as the way they would ensure that the majority never overran the minority."

QuickTime File http://reid.senate.gov/video/isakson.mov (from senate.gov website) - Just watch the whole thing, it's about 1 min 30 sec, and it's priceless.

1. I'm getting an error message on your link to the Reid
website. I did a search for Isakson on the site and didn't turn up anything.

10. Nope.
It was done after the Iraqi elections, some time ago. Don't get it twisted though, Isackson will stand with Bill Frist on the filibuster, despite his words in the well of the Senate.

such is life.

Tim

P.S. Thanks for linking my post!

9. Ya'll need to stop doing all that research on the internets.
All you use it for is to find examples of right wing hypocrisy. It's outrageous, I tell you.

12. Those who aren't against us.....
I think the Republicans are realizing the 2006 is coming and if they don't behave themselves they will be booted out - whether the vote machines malfunction or not.

This is really good news. There was a lot of Bi-Partisan activity under Clinton when the scandals were flying and all the DEMS wanted to give no reason for their own demise.... now the repugs are trying to prove they are Republicans and not just dimwitted yes men to the prez.

We only needed one swing voter on the filibuster and I think this is the second Republican that's said publicly they are not in favor of the nuclear option.

First the FRC hypocrisy, then Frist's hypocrisy on filibusters and now this.

I'm loving it!!

14. Has Isakson said he will vote against the rule change? If he intends to
vote w/Frist and all the Republicans, that speech needs to replayed in TV commercials attacking him. I don't know when he made that speech, but since he was talking about the Iraqi elections, it was probably Feb. 2005. I don't know how Isakson can go from making a rational argument in support of the filibuster, and then two months later completely contradict himself.

15. Just fired this off to Sen. Mitch "We have the votes" McConnell
(Note I'd already forwarded his office the news of the FRC supporting the filibuster in 1998 and of Sen. Frist's own hypocrisy.)

Dear Sen. McConnell.

Sorry to be the bearer, yet again, of bad news, but, if you weren't such a hypocrite I wouldn't have to.

Does the name Senator Isakson (R-Ga) ring any bells with you, sir? If not, they should.

I invite you to view this video of Sen. Isakson stating, on the Senate floor no less:

"Don't you fear that the Shi'ites inevitably being in the majority, that you will be overrun? And he says, 'oh no, we have a secret weapon.' Mr. President, this is a Kurdish leader, in the middle of Iraq in the 21st century who said he had a secret weapon. And when asked what it was, he said one word, 'filibuster'" <...>

"It is one of their minority leaders, proudly stating one of the pillars and principles of our government, as the way they would ensure that the majority never overran the minority."

http://reid.senate.gov/video/isakson.mov

Now, will you kindly apologize to the entire nation for being such a blatant hypocrite?
