Newsmax Pretends Clark's joke about Delay (on Maher) was serious!!!
Edited on Sun Apr-24-05 04:54 PM by Sparkly
When General Clark joked that Delay shouldn't be allowed to play golf, I actually SAID "they'll add this to the list -- like Al Gore's lullabye and Clark registering Democrat because Rove didn't return his phone calls. They'll now say Clark wants to ban Delay from playing golf."

I was half kidding. But sure enough, they're doing it. From newsmax:

Gen. Clark Urges Golf Ban for DeLay

The campaign against House Majority Leader Tom DeLay reached new heights of hysteria last week, with former Democratic presidential candidate Gen. Wesley Clark urging that the top Republican be banned from playing golf.

"I like golf," Clark told HBO's "Real Time" host Bill Maher. "And I'm sorry that Tom DeLay plays golf." Then the one-time top military man went off the deep end.

"I think that people who are charged with ethics violations in Congress should be prohibited from playing golf," he told Maher.

Why?

"Because if you can't trust them in Congress, how can you trust their score on a golf course?" Clark explained.

6. They're not stupid. They know exactly what they're doing.
They're betting that we the American people are stupid. And some of us are.

NGU.

2. Does Newsmax have a sense of humor?
Apparently not! Were they mad when the General referred to shrub as "your president" when he was speaking to the wingnut Frum? That was my personal favorite! :D

4. They probably were mad about that.
And this is intentional. Notice they didn't say anything about the General laughing as he said this. They only said he "urged," "told," and "explained." Not "joked," "laughed," or "quipped."

22. You bet. Heck the whole panel was laughing.
Even Frum if I remember correctly.
I remember I didn't like it too much specifically because they were joking.
We got redistricted here in Texas because DeLay pushed it and helped pay for it with his crooked dealings, and I lost a Democratic rep and got stuck with a wingnut.
I'm still fuming. :grr:

7. Yes, but this is how it starts.
Next it'll go around the internet(s), then rightwing radio, then it'll become "common wisdom" and simply saying "he was KIDDING" won't register. The brilliant retort becomes, "He was not."

13. Since it is impossible to have intelligent conversations with
people who believe the garbage Newsmax and hate radio spews, and nothing we say will convince them they are wrong...I propose responding with comments such as (thanks to Weekly World News for providing the material), "Did you know Jesus' sandal was found in Central Park?", or "My God, a space alien was just caught hugging John Kerry!"

Might be amusing to watch their reactions.

on lobbyists' credit cards either! Yea, we could do a bit of "framing" of our own ... capisci???

10. Definitely.
He could demolish their thirty-year, multi-million dollar campaign to prop up stereotypes about what Democrats are and what Republicans are. And they'd never be able to recover it.

11. The ending of the Newsmax article is also bogus
============================
Contrary to Clark's claim, DeLay hasn't been "charged" with anything, although he did travel to Scotland to play golf a few years back.
===========================================

Tom DeLay hasn't been indicted in a court of law, but he was charged and reprimanded with ethical violations by the House Ethics Committee .

12. David Limburger and I have actually had an email
conversation about Clark once - shortly before Clark got in the race.

He's an idiot. He honestly believes Clark supporters wanted Clark to run as a stalking horse for Hillary. What a dolt!

So yes, they are idiots, but unfortunately there are a lot of them.

Though what Clark said here, even if he weren't joking, would hardly constitute a threat. Unless the General were suddenly appointed to Commissioner of the PGA or something ;)

18. No mention about Clarke's brilliant quip about assault rifles...
Paraphrashing, he said they don't belong in the main sector of society. He looked at Frum (National Review) & said, "You want an assault rifle? I've got a uniform & some boots for you."

Reminds me of nostamj's bumper sticker: "Support Bush? Enlist Now!"

35. I was embarrassed for Frum.
He stammered & looked uncomfortable, never looking anyone in the eye. I felt like it was a small vindication for our side, considering all the dorky (& outnumbered) Democratic talking heads selected by the corporate media to counter all those "brilliant & galactic" :sarcasm: Repugs.

25. I think it's absolutely hysterical that they would do that.
And I mean hysterical in both senses of the term. Hysterically funny because it's just so ridiculous, and hysterical as in, it's a reflection of RW hysteria.

This is like the claims that John Kerry was going to ban the Bible if he became President. It's incredible what these clowns will make up.

My question is, do any readers of newsmax actually take the stuff seriously that they write? Or do they know that it's just insane rantings, and read it because they get a kick out that sort of thing.?
