Another batch of subpoenas in the ongoin TRM investigation was made public by Travis County DA Ronnie Earle yesterday, and they are all about Tom DeLay in one way or another.

Nearly 50 subpoenas -- some issued Tuesday and others dating back to last October -- were made public as part of the ongoing investigation into Texans for a Republican Majority, a political action committee formed by DeLay, R-Sugar Land.

The subpoenas seek testimony and documents from the committee's researchers, political consultants and fund-raisers, including DeLay's daughter, Danielle Ferro.

The weekend included a late-night party Saturday in DeLay's suite at the Rio Hotel and Casino, which featured a living room, bar and hot tub on the balcony. DeLay was not present, aides said; the event was hosted by his daughter, Dani Ferro, the campaign manager for DeLay's reelection campaign. After the party, Ferro told associates that a lobbyist poured champagne on her while she was in the hot tub.

DeLay's daughter, Danielle K. Ferro, received a subpoena this month, compelling her to provide documents relating to any business dealings she had with TRMPAC.

Ferro was traveling abroad and couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday, said her husband, Steven Ferro. A spokesman for DeLay said that Danielle Ferro, who has worked in her father's political campaigns, had no significant role with TRMPAC in 2002.

"Ronnie Earle has stooped to the level of subpoenaing the daughter of the majority leader, whose role was limited to selecting the caterer for an event," said Jonathan Grella of DeLay's office in Washington. "What's next, the florist?"

So, all she did was select the caterer? Interesting. According to TRMPAC’s tax returns, the group paid DeLay’s daughter, Danielle Ferro, and her fund-raising firm nearly $30,000 in monthly installments during the 2002 election cycle. Either Grella isn’t telling the whole truth or Ferro actually received all that cash simply for selecting a caterer. If the task took, say, two days, that works out to roughly $2,000 an hour, $320,000 a month, or an annual salary of $3.8 million. To which we ask, how do you get that gig? And what were they paying the florist?

State law allows political action committees to use corporate funds for administrative expenses such as utilities or accounting fees, but it is a third-degree felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, to use corporate money for direct political activities.

TRMPAC officials claim the corporate expenditures were administrative, but Earle's probe is directed toward proving the money was prohibited political spending.

Records also were sought from Willie G's Seafood restaurant for contracts and invoices between the restaurant and Ferro or TRMPAC.

Several of the subpoenas reached into the Houston area. Continental Airlines was asked last December to provide documents related to its "commitment to provide $15,000 in airfare" to TRMPAC.
