Working the ref from the other side...
The right has been very effective at casting any coverage to the left of talk radio as "biased", and no matter how much of a lock the right has on the media, the left seems unwilling to call it what it is: conservative. I think I may have finally come up with a way to both fix the media, and give us the ability to work the ref by claiming "bias" at any unfavorable reporting: Propose a media reform bill.

I'm unsure of what exactly such a bill should contain, but it should certainly have some recourse for punishing companies that abuse the public airwaves with Swift Boat Vet advertisements posing as news segments. It should outlaw the airing of government produced fake news, and it should limit the size of the market any company can control. And any unfavorable coverage the media throws at us can then be said to be motivated by a desire of greedy media barons to derail reform.
