Stealth Framing: "Arctic National Wildlife REGION"
Edited on Sun Mar-27-05 08:52 PM by omega minimo
Tim Russert on "Meet The Press" referred in passing to the Arctic National Wildlife Region-- not Refuge. I wasn't aware that the name has been changed, since Rethugs voted to violate the preserve for oil companies. Oversight, stealth framing or ...?

I also noticed during Cheney's inauguration, when he repeated his oath, he was instructed to say "execute the duties of my office." He said, "...execute the duties of THE office..." Didn't specify WHICH office that would be.

Can't keep up with the doublespeak propaganda framing spin and good old fashioned bullshit.

How will establishing think tanks and theoretical schools of counter-framing effectively combat the level of brainwashing the Wrong Wing has achieved? Can we encourage everyday Americans to pay attention to simple-- and misleading-- turns of phrase?

edit: sorry all. edit for Arctic National--- got hyped on REGION for Refuge.

1. He left out the "wildlife" part?
That's the "w" in ANWR.

2. First, I actually think putting in "region" is good for us.

"Region" implies that it's a rather large area. I think people need to understand that.

Secondly, if that's what he was saying, he's being pretty redundant. It's not called "Anwar"...it's ANWR, short for Alaska(n) National Wildlife Refuge. So you can just call it ANWR, but I say go ahead and throw in "region," too, if you can. Sounds like a good thing, to me.

4. If the term is ANWRefuge then he could call it that
unless it was an oversight (doubt it) or intentional.

Referring to the established designation incorrectly as a "region" (rich in resources and open for exploration) rather than a "refuge" protected area, effectively "frames" any discussion--

I could be splitting hairs or this could be a damn effective way to sneakily nudge public opinion and perception.

Shifting language in passing is how they do this. Noticed the rampant use of "sustainability" by Rethugs in the SS punditry last week as well.

3. Hate to rain on your parade but the oath
does say "...execute the duties of THE office..."

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.

5. That's fair
The man administering the oath said, "MY office." So he got it wrong.

Thanks for the info.
