Damn! The GOP is kicking our asses yet again on Schiavo.
Edited on Tue Mar-22-05 10:21 AM by John_H
You gotta admit: they are not only evil, but good. They've managed to not only turn the debateinto a PR referendum on the "moral fiber" of the two political parties, but have used it to fire the first major salvo on the supreme court nominations issue. When this gets to the supreme court they'll really kick the "Ohhhhh. Ohhhhh. What kind of court do we want?" thing into high gear.

The whores have helped them, natch, but didn't the Dem message people see this coming?

Every time I see a dem surrogate actually argue the merits of this case instead of saying "In a country ruled by laws, not men this is an issue for the courts" and then lambasting the GOP for playing politics with a woman's life, I literally want to puke.

2. this is all about whipping up their base for the supreme court fight
They want a huge media debate when this gets to the supreme court just as she's nearing death.

4. You've GOT to be kidding me.
Even the uber-freeper bush-lovin' fundie my husband works with told him yesterday that Congress interfering in this case made him "VERY uncomfortable" and he found it "disturbing." Those were the uber-freeper's words.

When a guy like THAT disagrees with DeLay, bush et al, they are in TROUBLE.

7. One way to fight back is with $ facts.
Evidently the cost for just the circus this weekend was 7 million dollars.

Republicans don't care how they spend money nor on what they spend the money....just to have another lie and propaganda issue.

We can't really criticize what the state and federal courts have spent on this. But maybe we can now that her family has blatantly joined in the political stuff.

You are wrong.
Republicans are fundamentally drunk on power and have to kiss the ass of thier radical fundy supporters that they are going to alienate thier conservative base. Conservatives don't want the government passing laws that usurp powers for the states or passing laws of attainder.

This is backfiring majorly and the Democrats are going to make hay of it once the cable news cycles move on. Great campaign issue.

9. The GOP is good at dividing people and exploiting social issues
but I think this one is going to backfire. It's painfully obvious to everyone except the uber-fundies that the GOP is doing nothing but parading the brain-dead body of a poor woman in front of the cameras in order to score political points with the extremist elements of their party. Even conservatives who oppose abortion and euthanasia are getting uncomfortable with the blatant invasion of privacy and lack of regard for states' rights. Most people, conservative and liberal alike, would not want to be kept alive in the state Schiavo is in, and the idea that the Republicans are more than willing to kick in someone's hospital door, deny them their right to die, and parade their vegetative bodies before the cameras for political gain is going to leave a bad taste in most peoples' mouths.

the polls show that the public OVERWHELMINGLY supports the husband and OVERWHELMINGLY opposes the actions taken by congress and the president.

13. That's not how it looks and sounds to me
I think they have come across as ignorant and extremely ridiculous. This has not gone over well with my repug neighbors (all around me) who are not members of the fringe element running the show. I've had to deal with this issue not once, but twice with both parents. I, along with my RED neighbors, find this a repulsive circus.

I have also been informing anyone who will listen that if the extreme version of the "right to life" agenda is ever put into law, (among other things) organ transplantation will be in jeopardy since, (I worked in the O.R. for years) the plug is pulled AFTER organs are harvested to ensure viability of the organs. If we cannot pull the plug on anyone, even if their brain tissue is oozing out of their ears and nose, then I hope no one ever needs a kidney or a heart transplant because you will be shit out of luck.

18. CNN/MSNBC/etc are going overboard to make you think that way
The fact is that most people don't agree with the GOP on this one. CNN may force Sanjay Gupta to give equal time to the nutjobs that say Schiavo's brain is going to grow back in a year, but I hope most Americans will see through the garbage.

The rest of the public is highly disapproving.

Honestly? I don't think this will make a big difference, one way or another. There's still over a year and a half until the 2006 midterms. Methinks this will all be forgotten by campaign season next year--ESPECIALLY if it turns out bad for the GoOP.

22. wrong and we need to hammer the GOP
They have provided Dems with an enormous opportunity to distinguish ourselves from the repubs. We are the party of personal liberty; they want to control the most personal, intimate aspects of our lives. We need to hammer away at this...it will enormously strengthen our hand if/when they try to appoint a Talibaner to a Supreme COurt vacancy.

My new Dem Slogan (gonna get a bumper sticker):
"Its MY Life,Not The GOP's"

onenote

23. Actually, this time they don't seem to, for a change.
I agree, they're good. But this time... Let's see what happens. But the fact that the judge refused to reinsert the tube yesterday is definitely a big setback for them, espeically after the whole charade of flying from Texas and signing the bill at 1 AM.

1:08, excuse me!
