I'd be interested to see if all the cheers and "right on!" posts in this thread would be duplicated if this happened in America...if Moveon and ANSWER were shut down by the feds and their leaders charged with "fomenting rebellion" for their mass protests against Bush.

Let's not be hypocrites people. Don't call for revolution or the overthrow of Shrub here while cheering a leftist president who jails and kills people doing the same thing there.

1. Bad analogy
MoveOn and ANSWER never plotted the violent overthrow of the government. Nor have they engaged in actions that lead to people getting killed.

You want a better analogy? How about when they caught Karl Armstrong? That's not even that accurate an analogy, since the New Years Gang was never backed by US N.E.D. tax dollars (or Soviet funds, to morph the analogy a bit for the time period).

Maybe the best analogy would be the corporate leaders that attempted to get Smedley Butler to overthrow FDR, but they were never charged with anything, so that doesn't really work here.

2. Venezuela already
had a failed military coup against the democratically elected Chávez, backed by the CIA and foreign corporations. They are undoubtedly going to try again now that Venezuela has gotten cosy with China. I think it makes a lot of sense to arrest people who are involved in planning things like that. Ortega was involved not only in the strike but also in the military coup, so MoveOn is hardly an adequate comparison.

And he's not a labour leader, he's working for ExxonMobil and the like.

Chávez should just turn the other cheek and relinquish the power then?

then lets discuss the issue of what Chavez does to protect his country and people from "Corporatocracy".

Chavez is a hero IMHO!
