American mail order brides?

My daughter knows a young girl (20s) who damaged her health with drugs and is unemployed. She offered herself as a mail order bride to a Canadian she's never met and is moving to Montreal next month to get married. Does anyone know how common this is? We're from a large metro area on the border of 2 red states. I figure if someone in my family knows of this, it must not be rare.

1. I don't know about that but I know a lot of Americans

fly to China to marry well off Chinese so that they can become citizens. And they get paid by the buttload.

2. I know of...

..a gal in her 30s from my old town (springfield Il)..that last summer went to Morocco and maried a guy she never met..she is very blue collar, in her 30s and has little grasp of what other cultures are about..close friends suspect it is a scam so this guy can become a citizen..can that happen even if the marriage takes place on foreign soil?
