By Greg Mitchell

Published: February 08, 2005 updated 5:00 PM ET

NEW YORK As so often in the past, the press once again is feeding a Deep Throat frenzy, apparently set off by the opening of the Woodward and Bernstein archives on Watergate at the University of Texas last week. ...

2. Tricky Dick (Nixon).
Before that, Rehnquist was Nixon's assistant Attorney General.
He's also believed to have been a key source for Wooodward on The Brethren, a book that was an expose on the Supreme Court. Plus he smoked and he's ex-military, two qualifications Woodward has listed for Deep Throat.

4. I don't see how it could be Rehnquist.
First, it was Nixon who appointed him to the Supreme Court. Even with the latest character flaws we've learned recently about Rehnquist & his devotion to the BFEE, I don't think he'd stoop so low as to betray the man who put him on the highest court.

Second, Rehnquist wasn't in the inner circle of the White House. He wouldn't have been in the Oval Office on a daily basis to hear all the pertinent conversations going on. He wasn't in the loop.

5. Rehnquist ??
John Dean said, as you said, that it had to be someone in the White House's inner circle ... Rehnquist would not qualify for that ...

Dean also said that it had to be someone who was in the inner circle during or after 1973 when the 18 1/2 minute gap appeared on Nixon's Oval Office recording ... he argued that staffers who left the White House before this wouldn't have known about the gap ...

I have no idea who "Deep Throat" is but it's hard to see how Rehnquist would meet the criteria Dean defined ... this doesn't necessarily rule Rehnquist out but it makes explaining his access to Nixon a complicating factor ...

7. Did he drink scotch, smoke cigarettes, and look like Hal Holbrook?
That's what John Dean mentioned on Olberman last night. Woodward or Bernstein hinted at that and, apparently, one of them said Hal Holbrook was a good choice for Deep Throat.
