Wesley Clark to get nod from David Dinkins

January 21, 2004, 2:55 PM EST

NEW YORK -- Former mayor David Dinkins was to endorse Democratic presidential candidate Wesley Clark on Wednesday, Clark's campaign said.

Dinkins, the city's first black mayor, was elected in 1989 and lost his re-election bid to Rudolph Giuliani four years later.

Dinkins was to announce the endorsement in an afternoon conference call with reporters Wednesday.

On Monday, Dinkins attended a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event with one of Clark's opponents, the Rev. Al Sharpton, whom he called "the people's minister."

3. Dinkins!
Probably the worst mayor in NYC history. I would not look upon his endorsement as a good thing.

5. Lets look at the success
of those that each has endorsed and see how their respective candidates have done.

And NYers do not like Dinkins and his endorsement could actually lose votes for him. Maybe not enough to cost him NYs electoral votes, but I don't want to risk losing NY as doing so would assure defeat. NY must be won!

8. "NYers do not like Dinkins"

So, you're the self appointed spokesman for NYers?

Even though he won't go down as the best mayor in NYC history, Dinkins is still liked by many NYers and for many reasons, among them that he is a decent and compassionate man....not to mention his liberal views on many issues....

6. Also a big help in the NY primary
Dinkins, Charlie Rangel and David Patterson are all big names in NY's African-American community.

10. I love all three of these New Yorkers
I worked on campaigns for each of them and I could have predicted they would choose Wes Clark. These are real liberal Dems, New York at its best.

7. I wouldn't say that
David Dinkins introduced a much needed civility into the atmosphere that affected NYC immediately and also the Safe Streets, Safe City program which was very successful. He stumbled over controlling a riot in Crown Heights and that's all he is remembered for, but I remember many good things he did as mayor. He is a wonderful gentleman. I'm proud to have his endorsement for Wes. New Yorkers who hate David Dinkins would not necessarily be voting for Wes in any case.

9. Dinkins Is Sort Of Like The Jimmy Carter Of NYC
He is a good man who made a mistake, is much maligned by a few for that mistake and has gone on to do things after his tenure in office.

12. no doubt........

Dinkins endorsement is a fine endorsement for General Clark......further proof that Democrats know a good Democrat when they see one......I think it's time for the "Republican" label that certain people are trying to place on Clark to be peeled off and thrown away for good......
