A quote from 'National Treasure' (the movie)
I was struck when Nic Cage read this snip from the Declaration of Independence early in the movie. Altho the storyline has nothing to do with 'current events', this quote shook me to my shoes.

I'm hoping I wasn't the ONLY one in the theatre that it gave pause to.

"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security."

My sweetheart and I both wept.

Also, what they did with the treasure made us cry. Sure, they got 1 percent each. But contrast that nobility of spirit with, say, the Pirates of PNAC.

I thought to myself, 'cheney you, Grover Norquist'.

2. Just saw the movie. He's talking to us!
Of course, people who get 'special' messages from the radio, TV, or films are generally judged to be...well. It's a great quote. I think he was talking directly to me and not you, though. No offense. Great post! You're a natural detective! (of the Sam Spede kind).

18. Who plays Asta?
Sounds like a good movie. Hubby hates (theater) movies, may have to "sneak off" to see it at the picture show. Or wait for the video so the doggie can watch it too.

19. Your question made my DU session!
I forgot about the dog. There was no dog in the movie. Since it's set up for sequels, we can only hope that there is a dog, better yet a cat!

16. Okay....you've convince me...I'm going to see it! Thanks! a couple of
posts in the Lounge last night turned me off to it. Calling it "formulaic," etc.

I was up for something adventuresome with a plot ...even if it's thin...but the quote really is worth going to see it for. :D

8. Interesting and insightful quote...
I know Cage was against * from the beginning. And statements in movies don't come out of the blue.

I just watched a crappy movie from the 80's called "red dawn". It was a bratpack movie but basically is was a cold war "what if" drama. About the Soviets invading the US.

What I find particularly poignant about it is: the kids could be the manual for the Iraqi rebels to follow.
US invades Iraq (soviets invade US)
the US pisses off the Iraqis (soviets piss off the US)
US has prison camps, abu garib, (soviets have prison camps)
US fights a indigenous population, (soviets fight the bratpack aka rebels)

Through attrition, they wear down the Soviet occupation and push them back. Just an interesting comparison.

was the only thing about that movie I enjoyed. Just saw it today and shortly after that scene lost interest.

11. Another thing that struck me about the movie ...
and really, all of the 'super spy' movies in recent memory - if Joe and Jane Sixpack can watch those movies and comprehend the level of computer/intelligence hacking that govt's TRULY are capable of, why would they think for a second that an election couldn't be hacked ??

12. What was the movie rated?
Is there any sexual overtones or lots of kissing? My kids want to see it and they said it was rated PG>

15. Children were present in the theater I was in
No cursing, no sex (a kiss or two at most), some skeletons that might be scary to the really young. And it was PG.

13. Yes and no.
It did serve the plot. He was trying to say that he was going to become the new guardian for the Dec. Of Ind.

On the other hand, it did make me wonder what Cage's political affiliation was.

I said the quote/plot were not related to CURRENT EVENTS.
I did NOT say the quote was not related to the plot.

Thanks ~ :hi:

17.  EVERYONE should read the Declaration of Independence,
and understand that this stirring call to arms is OUR rightful heritage. If we really took it to heart, we would NOT be putting up with the crap that's been going down for these past four years.

The emphasis on that quotation was wierd because it didn't really have anything to do with the plot.

I would also offer up Nicks toast to treason and his explanation for it. This seemed to be a paraphrasing of Patrick Henrys quote, "If this be treason, then let us make the most of it".

Made me feel in good company after remebering those quotes after years of being called a traitor because I do not salute high enough for the Chimperor.
