If you are in the process of misplacing something, you are LOSING it.
Jesus, I'm sorry to belabor this, but can't we be a little smarter than the idiot freepers?

11. No, I'm not the grammar police, I'm the spelling cop.
:D

But, seriously, shouldn't we make every effort to appear as intelligent as we actually are? We poke fun at the freepers for their linguistic bungles, why should we allow our own to commit similar errors without a gentle reminder or correction?

Never noticed that it was even an issue till someone on a baseball board mentioned it. Since then, and especially here at DU, I've noticed that it's misused at least half the time.

I can't figure it out...are we a nation of dyslexics or sumpin'?

That one is the one that annoys me the most, unless it's a repub saying "sore looser!", then it's funny. Other ones include

there/they're
your/your're
recieved/received
alot/a lot

etc...

Maybe I'm just picky :P

*edit* Forgot this funny story...

Here in NC I actually saw a state sticker on a gas pump that said, "Don't steal gas, you could loose your license". Incredible that could get past enough people in NC to be printed on a sticker.

16. Maybe it's just that I'm an old phart, schooled in several languages,
of which English is likely the most variegated and expressive of all extant tongues. (The Eskimos have us beat in a few areas, with their several dozen quasi-synomyms for "snow") but overall, the vocabulary we putatively embrace is far more inclusive and varied (probably because we employ words from half a dozen Romance languanges and a few Arabic ones as well) than likely any other. It really does appear to me that we've
become linguistically morose; but perhaps that isn't a bad thing if it makes communication possible. And a very big :eyes: on that one.

23. Wanna know the word for SNOW in
...Farsi?

Barf. BARF!!!

The Iranians have a laundry detergent by that very name--it's Ivory Snow, essentially. Wash your clothes in BARF!! They will be so bright and clean!

And ARABIC words...we do indeed use a bunch of 'em! Admiral, sherbet, assassin, loofah (Dild O'Reilly's personal favorite)...from algebra to zero, there's more arabic influence on the English language than many realize!

18. From the Winston-Salem (NC) Journal last summer
on the misuse of apostrophes:

---------------------

"A Mount Airy reader has commented on recent items here about the use of apostrophes in forming possessives and their improper use in forming plurals. He wrote:

How long has it been since you rode through lovely downtown Cana, that 'town' just north of the NC line on US52 that's about 2 miles long and 400 yds wide? It is, as it has been for all of my 32 years in Mount Airy, either Apostrophe Heaven or Apostrophe Hell, depending on your point of view. I'm confident that there are more apostrophes per capita in Cana, Va. than anywhere else on earth.

First, apostrophes are employed in the construction of virtually all pluralizations: 'lope's, apple's, 'mater's, and on and on. One notable entrepreneur is apparently named Jone, given the number of Jone's signs we see and some of these signs are of a commercial, semi-permanent variety."

15. Unfortunately, there IS such a word
But I do understand that your irritation stems from the use of that word when one wants to say losing, or lose. The word is not common, most people use "loosening" nowadays.

http://www.lifeissues.net/writers/ron/ron_211bindingloosing.html

Here's a painfully soporific essay on 'Binding and Loosing' that uses the very word in the title.

I suppose we should expect misuse to increase. After all, the weecowboy just loves to cry havoc and loose those dogs of war, y'll....

with all due respect to your link, I did finally, after my initial public gripe, check 2 of my dictionaries, Webster's old Collegiate (1962) and my newer one (2001) for an entry of "loosing." Alas, it appears in neither. Of course, I perfectly grasp your reply and wouldn't disagree for a moment. We know how to spell it. It just irks me because I'm an old anal curmudgeon. :D

50. While we're at it.
You're = You are.
Your = Belonging to you.

They're = They are.
There = At that place.
Their = Belonging to them.

It's = It is.
Its = Belonging to it.

I believe that the larger mistake with the Freepers is their utter disdain for playing by the rules of common ethics and logic.

Spelling inadequacies aside, we face a greater problem in trying to overcome their belligerence and unwillingness to compromise over the simplest matters of right and wrong; their constant spelling errors are merely symptoms of a mind which lacks critical thinking skills.
