Dems Finally Get A Spine=Victory in 2004
• Ted Kennedy blasts shrub and his traitorous lies on Wednesday.

• Al Gore castrates bush as a "moral coward" on bush's stupid space cadet proposals and the environment on Thursday.

• Wes Clark is sticking it to bush's ineptitude and lies like a sweaty tee shirt on a longshoreman.

• Howard Dean continues with what he's been doing for a year - blasting bush on everything.

• Bush invites himself to the MLK ceremonies and gets booed in the process.

Friends, the Dems have found their spines, and it means that we are going to cream these guys this year!

I have long held that a percentage of Americans vote repug for the simple reason that they feel "republicans stand for something." It doesn't mean that what they stand for is right or beneficial, only that they have the conviction of their beliefs. The American populace is conditioned to believe that such means - any means - justifies the ends. They see it in their pop culture, in Ah-nold movies where any muscle-bound hero who stands up for "what's right" overcomes death-defying odds and emerges victorious with the bad guys lying dead in the sewer or impaled on a tree limb; in slasher films where they know that the sure way for a teenager to become a victim of Freddy Kruger or Jason is to engage in a sex act about 4 minutes before the end of their lives; in the Pollyanna American press reports which take each piece of the bush disaster shit and turn it into weepy-eyed, patriotic, flag-waving shinola. In a world where black is white and up is down, simple platitudes and a "never apologize, never give up" attitude work wonders among the sheeple.

But this year, it's different. Our guys are not allowing the repigs to frame the issues.

Say what you will about Howard Dean's anger, say what you will about Robert Byrd's lonely battles to state the obvious truth on the floor of the Senate, they have paved the way for Dems across the board to find their bearings, stiffen their spines and fight back the way Dems fought back before the DLC and their spin doctors castrated and lobotomized us into hopeless and hapless denizens of Eunichville, USA.

We're back, we're bad, and we're going to kick these bastards out of the White House - and maybe right out of the body politic - in 2004.

Dems - we ARE the future, and it starts NOW!

2. Next Steps
You're right, a great week. Let's also remember that every piece of progress has a "required follow-up action" behind it.

Example:

"Bush invites himself to the MLK ceremonies and gets booed in the process."

True. This creates a critical need for the Democratic candidates / volunteers to reach out to the people who "booed." Last night on Hannity & Colmes, Alan Colmes threw a figure out...he did not give the source...stating that in the 2000 election, 9% of African Americans voted for Bush. The number may be lower this year based on what we witnessed yesterday. Colmes asked "What can the President do to get more African American votes?" NAACP Deputy Director Michael Julian Bond suggested that Bush needed to change his policies on economics and affirmative action. Hannity shot him down and called the protests "disgraceful." He treated the honest response from Bond with contempt. The apple, in the Republican party, does not fall far from the tree. Mr. Bond's phone should have been ringing off the hook by the time he left the Fox studios.

We have not only have an increasingly disenchanted American population of all nationalities, we have a Republican party...and all of its offshoots and pundits and surrogates...living in denial. They simply want votes based compliance and agreement. Every time that attitude is displayed it creates an opportunity for the Democratic party. Increasing public opposition to Bush does not automatically translate into votes for a Democratic candidate.

If voters stay home on election day...regardless of race or party lines...they are simply Americans who did not vote for Bush (or anyone else). No one wins except the party with the greatest voter turnout (if 2004 turns out to be, in fact, a fair election without government intervention).

I truly hope that there is fast, furious and focused effort going on right now to address the opportunities behind each of these victories. It is progress but once we celebrate we need to do the same thing that the Bush re-election team will be doing over the next 11 months: take detailed note of every opportunity, all the angles, ask "how can we use this to our advantage"...then get busy. We're doing great. We can, and will, do better.
