John Kerry needs to immediately announce that win or lose, beginning Nov. 3 one of his top priorities will be to push for the prosecution of anyone who has engaged in unlawful voter suppression efforts. This is 2004. To think that organized efforts are underway to try to prevent minority voters from going to the polls is simply unbelievable. Forget the political impact, though that is a huge issue. I don’t give a damn whether it ultimately helps Bush or not. It’s wrong. It’s un-American. And at least in many cases (especially when directed against blacks and other minorities, it’s illegal).
The best way to stop this is the threat to criminal prosecution. Let the scum know this isn’t a game -- that their could be a big price to pay. It’s time for Kerry to make it clear that he intends to do everything in his power to make certain that this time efforts at vote suppression, in other words, efforts to deny people their constitutional rights, will land some folks in jail.
