1. PLEASE
I know there are lurking Lieberman supporters around, because someone always votes for him in polls like this -- but they never leave any posts behind explaining why.

Flaming is the furthest thing from my mind -- but will some of you Lieberman supporters explain why he's your pick among all the Dem candidates.

Thanks muchly in advance.

It is on the top of the page on the two popular forums telling you there is a vote going on at GD, that poll will stay up on the top of the page for 24 hours giving alot of people a chance to respond.

19. It does not matter who wins this poll.
But what I think this poll does represent is who will be going all the way to the end of the primaries.

And in my opinion this race may not actually get decided to the very end of the primary process & you should watch what you say right now for you may end up eating your words whateever candidate you are supporting.

22. Doesn't even show that
It's a gauge of support among DUers who take the poll. DUers are far from being representative of the voting public even in the Democratic primaries & caucuses. After all, where's Gep & Lieberman on these polls? Nowhere. Where are they in real national polls? Bunched up around the second tier with Clark.

Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 05:25 PM by Bucky
I always choose my words carefully, DemUnite. But frankly, Ari Fleischer has turned me off to the phrase "watch what you say". It smells too much like thought policing.

I'll repeat what I'm saying, too. The DU polls represent one very selective online community, not the broader Democratic Party where Clark, Lieberman, and Gephardt are just about even in current, scientific, opinion polls.

I vote Clark here cause I love my guy. But our polls really don't mean Jack.

The views of the DU community over time? If it is deliberately skewed by an onslaught of new members joining up to participate in the poll, as the result of announcements made at various blogs, what are they a measure of? Online poll wars?

24. Polls
One thing that has always bothered me about the political
process is that many people follow the leader and do not
seriously vote with their heart.

They think that to support and vote for a person who loses an
election makes them a loser and they would rather be on the
winning side whoever that may be.

For myself, I'm going with Dennis Kucinich until he either
is defeated or drops out of the race, then I'll put my full
support behind the Democratic Candidate whoever (whomever?)
that may be.

I always saw the primaries as a way to vote from your heart and conscience. I think it's wrong to be voting tactically at this point. The primaries is the way you show the party leadership who you would TRULY PREFER as the POTUS.

29. I'm happy it is hard to decide --
emotionally, I really like Dean -- Clark's nomination and election could be historically important, and he is a very bright man who brings a lot to the table -- but I still think Kerrey, a proven liberal, would be the best president, and I do think that should be the basis for our decision as a party -- not whose campaign is slickest, who can raise the best money, important as those things are, but who would be the best president.

Call me an idealist if you will.

32. Dennis Kucinich. Why? Single Payer HC and Trade/Labor Issues.
Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 01:42 PM by JanMichael
AFAIK, or heard, the frontrunners all seem to be enamoured with the WTO, GATT, NAFTA and FTAA. That is highly irresponsible in my very humble opinion. It's an issue that effects us all whether we know it, or simply don't want to recognise it, or don't.

I see that as an abrogation of their responsibilities to the America Worker as well as the people of other less powerful nations.

In regard to HC all I can say is that we're the only advanced nation in the World without a 100% coverage. We are not #1 like so many talking heads may think. Also the half assed, incremental, "Fabian" reforms are doomed to failure...Except of course the Big Pharmacuticals and HMO's will make out like bandits for a few years. Notice that the repukes brought up HC recently and said it's their new big issue? My guess is that it'll be a lot like what we've heard from many Dems. A smoke and mirrors givaway to big business.

Fabulous.

On edit I'd like to state that other than Lieberman, I'm pleased with all of our candidates, for the most part.

33. Kucinich is my pick, too,
for the same reasons you have outlined. I am astonished when I speak to people (my own mother, who is one of the most intelligent people I know) who have no clue with regard to GATT, WTO, NAFTA, etc. and the impact they have on our lives.

I consider myself a person of principle, but I live in the real world, at the same time. I love what Kucinich stands for, but I have to wonder just how far he'd make it with some of his proposals if he were to win the presidential election. There are very powerful interests out there who would never allow it. I believe it is possible, however, that he could make a dent, even if only a small one, to be chipped away at in the future.

If Kucinich wins, can we vote to impeach him like he did to Bill Clinton?

:spank:

I'm not kidding, check out his voting record. He voted to impeach Clinton. Thats tantamount to his joining in a right-wing coup attempt to me. And the bad thing is I like Dennis personally, I voted for him in every election he ever voted in from City Council, to Mayor, to Congress, and have spoken to him several times over the years when I lived in Cleveland.

I also believe that nominating Kucinich would be the real nominating McGovern again. I supported, and voted for McGovern, but I don't think American can handle that much perfection at once.:nuke:

126. Yes it is
look at the Clerks records for October 8, 1998, rollcall votes # 497, and 498. The motion was "is there enough evidence to impeach the president." Kucinich and the immortal Gary Condit voted along with 29 other Democrats for the resolution.

I used to live and work in Cleveland, and Dennis was my Congressman, and I remember a lot of people being VERY pissed off at his vote.

I tried finding the articles in the Cleveland Plain Dealers archives, but the don't go back that far. But I did find the on the House Clerks records.

I've always said, I personally like Dennis, but I couldn't excuse this!

As to the McGovern mantra I can only say that IF DK won the Dem primaries then all bets are off. Something bizzarre would have already happened and Bush would be toast.

Theres a few things (quite a few) that I didn't like about Clinton-Gore, but no way do you vote to impeach for the crap they had him for. I don't remember exactly what he said, but Dennis had some lame excuse. I know there were a lot of mad people when I got to work that morning.

Is there anything bizzare enough that could happen for DK to win the nomination? He does serve a good purpose though, by pulling the arguments to the left.

69. I would have voted to impeach Clinton, too, but not for MonicaGate
The bombing of the aspirin factory in Sudan was enough for me.

The fact that there was significant evidence available at the time to indicate it was making pharmaceuticals and not chemical weapons is sufficient enough proof that it was clearly an illegal act under international law. The needless deaths of countless eastern Africans who no longer had access to the drugs the factory produced is something else you could have nailed him on, too, all because he was afraid to admit he was banging an intern.

Clinton was an embarassment to many Democrats, no matter what the rose-colored glasses of hindsight say.

60. Nope. He voted for the inquiry, not to Impeach.
"Kucinich said he was one of the few Democrats who voted for the U.S. House to proceed with an inquiry. However, he voted against impeachment. The U.S. Senate ultimately acquitted Clinton in February 1999."

"I thought, as a member of Congress, that there was enough reason to go forward with asking questions," Kucinich said. "But when we did that, not enough information was produced to rise to the level of an impeachable offense.""

127. Whats the difference
It's like handing Tom DeLay (R-Worlds Biggest Asshole )(TX) and Henry Hyde a hatchet and telling them not to use it.

I'm sorry, but I agree with Dennis on a lot of things, and he did a lot of things for me from his office, on union matters, but loyalty is a big thing for me. I saw him at the Florida convention, and told him why I'm supporting Dean. He wasn't happy, but I don't think he lost any sleep over it.

He knows he can't win, but I agree he's doing a good job pulling the whole campaign to the left. Lieberman doesn't get it at all, and might replace Cheney on the Repuke ticket.

Voting to investigate a potential crime by the President and voting that said investigation proved to be fruitless. That's the difference.

And I tend to lose respect for people who tell falsehoods about a very honorable man.

Dennis does what he believes is right, and he is probably quite disturbed by the way powerful people abuse their power for sex. As a Dean supporter (and Clinton supporter too) I forgive him. It was a dumb move, but far more connected to his personal morality than any coup attempt, I bet.

I'm increasingly convinced this will be my last 'lesser of two evils' vote.

Sock puppets are, for those who might not know, other identities used by a single user in order to manipulate polls.

are demonstrating that Dean, Clark and Kucinich have the only remaining activist pool of online supporters. With the exception of the Kucinich results they do tend to confirm the two-man race trend that has been emerging in some Feb 3 primary polls.

67. I'm not anti-Dean
I'm pro-Clark. I doubt there is much lesser evil voting going on at a DU poll, and it doesn't matter if there is. Eventually the field will narrow down to two choices and finally one winner. Sooner or later everyone has to either embrace whoever is the perceived front runner, or whoever is perceived to be most likely to beat the perceived front runnner, and then hopefully almost all of us will campaign for the eventual nominee.

I'm suprised DK did as well as he did, since BartCop is very Pro-Clark AFAIK (I haven't read him in a while, so I could be wrong).

That, compounded with the Alexa numbers, indicate that DK will be the spoiler in the Dean/Clark race (if indeed it comes to that).

easily Scammed. I voted in it a few times to prove to myself that it was worthless, then ignored it. At the time I voted it was roughly dead even, and then slowly trended towards Dean over a period of a couple days. I've noticed a lot of Deanies like to sit around, dumping their cookies, voting over and over.

Whatever.

I will support Clark if he wins, on the one hand Clark needs Deans
political skills and perhaps Dean needs some of Clarks resume'

A dream ticket for me would be Dean/Clark or Clark/Dean.

I just feel both of these candidates have been introduced and selected
in similar ways by a grassroots movement.

"Leaders don't create movements, movements create and choose Leaders."

Both of these guys are listening to many activists and voters and they
should be regarded as true patriots for their passion and fight.

Number 1 priority, Get the thugs out of there. None of our folks are
thugs and we can be proud of that.

Tonedeaf, misguided, out of touch, egomaniacs maybe, but none of ours

I've gotten alot of good info by reading DU - even the flame wars. It's alot easier to syphon the facts out of the partisan posts without getting caught up in the emotional aspect of it. I know enough to know that it's best to not make a decision until right before I vote. If I were in Iowa instead of Oregon, I might be sweating it a little by now.

OK - I go for clark but here's some info for everyone to think about:

Here's a Gallup poll from December, 1991 ... :

Mario Cuomo - 33%
Jerry Brown - 15
Douglas Wilder - 9
Bob Kerrey - 8
Tom Harkin - 7
Bill Clinton - 6
Paul Tsongas - 4
Undecided/Others - 18

So let's all remember that "frontrunners" in December may mean very little.

133. BEST STICK TO HITCH HIKING
My preference in order would be Sharpton, Braun, Kucinich, and none of the others. Pervasive racism of the US rules the first two out. Kucinich isn't a populist but his mouth could force him to learn to become one. That's what is being sought by the majority of Americans who don't vote because they've found the hard way they lose no matter the winner. Unfortunately for them, if Kucinich should so upset the apple cart by waking people from their dreams of the myth of democracy, he would be shot, or as seems the latest fashion, go in a small aircraft mishap.
