Big-Deal devastating MSM news article (re: Iraq Planning)
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 09:03 PM by troublemaker
posting this here because everyone dealing with potential voters should know about it. (As well as the even more shocking Ron Suskind NYT article; link below)
Planning for after the war in Iraq non-existent

By WARREN P. STROBEL and JOHN WALCOTT
Knight Ridder Newspapers

WASHINGTON - In March 2003, days before the start of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, American war planners and intelligence officials met at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina to review the Bush administration's plans to oust Saddam Hussein and implant democracy in Iraq.

Near the end of his presentation, an Army lieutenant colonel who was giving a briefing showed a slide describing the Pentagon's plans for rebuilding Iraq after the war, known in the planners' parlance as Phase 4-C. He was uncomfortable with his material - and for good reason.

The slide said: "To Be Provided."

A Knight Ridder review of the administration's Iraq policy and decisions has found that it invaded Iraq without a comprehensive plan in place to secure and rebuild the country. The administration also failed to provide some 100,000 additional U.S. troops that American military commanders originally wanted to help restore order and reconstruct a country shattered by war, a brutal dictatorship and economic sanctions.

and don't miss the Ron Suskind NYT article (not Iraq, but the biggest Bush hit since Richard Clarke.) http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/17/magazine/17BUSH.html?oref=login&oref=login

4. Also, I like that he calls Christie Whitman a liar in that article
If Christie said what she's quoted as saying it can't help Bush in NJ (No big deal, bit it can't help)

5. what a picture these 2 articles create
i just finished reading the suskind article from the NYT Mag when i clicked on your thread. and my eyes have been opened. until now, i was pretty sure that bush was consciously using faith/god as a tool to gain and retain support - not that i didn't realize what a fundie he is, but i thought he was more cunning...but after reading the suskind article i was reconsidering and this paragraph from your link:

" Without an "overwhelming" effort to prepare for the U.S. occupation of Iraq, the report warned: "The United States may find itself in a radically different world over the next few years, a world in which the threat of Saddam Hussein seems like a pale shadow of new problems of America's own making.""

really brought it full circle - he really is on a crusade, isn't he? he thinks this is armageddon or something - he wants it to be this ugly and dispicable and grave. he really thinks he is doing the will of god and that anyone opposing him is doing the work of the devil. this is the scariest shit. and his team are the cunning ones - they found their perfect president - one who can manipulate morality enough to make this the obvious path for america.

aaaahhhh!

i'm about to go pour myself a nice glass of bourbon now.

7. Thanks
I think in the next two weeks, I'm going to print out these articles, along with the article written by DDE's son (http://www.theunionleader.com/articles_showa.html?article=44657)
and leave it on the doorsteps of all the people with Bush signs in my neighborhood (believe me, that's surprisingly not many and I live in a conservative voting district, which means many are re-considering whether Shrub is actually a Republican - we here know he's not - he's a neo-con/religious wingnut).
I suggest we all do the same.
If it changes but one mind, it's worth the effort.

10. Great Article
Thanks for the article. They lied to get us into war and then didn't have a plan for the peace. Its still a bit unbelievable isn't it!

As to lies before the war, I have put together a web site containing four short films about the Bush Administration.

<http://www.hoppervideo.net>

Please take a look and forward the web site to as many people as you can.  Please encourage those you contact to send the link on to others.

In particular, if you know any swing voters or Bush supporters, I encourage you to send them a personal message encouraging them to think about voting for Kerry, including my site and any others that might
sway them.

Three of the four films deal with the run-up to the war. While many things disturb me about the Bush Administration, its deceitful overselling of the case for WMD in Iraq is one of the more obvious reasons that these people do not deserve to lead our Nation.  Perhaps we will never know in detail the actual reasons we went to war, but there can be little doubt that lies and scare-tactics were used to rush us into this quagmire.

Since the movie files are fairly large, choosing a broadband location will enhance your viewing pleasure.
