Could somebody explain McCain to me?
I'm having a hard time with his buddy buddy thing with Bush.
Seriously.
When I saw the air force one footage today he looked absolutely mortified to be there....then I see him jump in and eagerly make his pitch.

Is he thinking he's next in line for the big chair? Or am I missing something...

TIA

It's very strange.

42. Check out the book (or two?) on him...
Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 01:11 AM by VoteJohn04_com
There's one for sure that I have called Citizen McCain
Check out Barnes and Noble... they had it on the clearance
table with a bunch of other political stuff... current
events section maybe?

Quick read...gives you some insight at least.

I actually don't think that he's two-faced... although, I
do wonder why there was such an about face. Seemed extreme
for McCain... wonder if he was threatened or PROMISED something.

I don't buy that he actually supports Bush, think he's just
trying to promote "party unity" or something.

That said I really hope that HE is an October surprise like
someone else suggested

4. He's too old for '08.
There's been speculation that the "october surprise" is to put McCain on the ticket in lieu of Cheney. The idea being to let Cheney get the really shitty rhetoric in against KE04, then have the relatively clean McCain step in as the Veep.

That's just scuttlebutt, though.

Scary as hell to think it might be true.

11. No respect for McCain
I used to respect McCain. When he was running for pres back in 2000 I would have voted for him over Gore (yeah, I'll admit it)

After watching the dog and pony show with him and *, he has none and will never have any respect from me.

He sold out.

I can't think of another reason why he would want to be anywhere in the vicinity of * after the 2000, what with the backhanded slander concerning McCain's daughter and his McCain's own mental health.

I'd be willing to bet that he'll be pulling the lever for Kerry/Edwards.

and substitute him for CHENEY...before the election..... but McCain is a douche bag republican and there would be no policy changes because Cheney would still have an office right next to the presidents in the West Wing and we would have the same neo-fascist in charge .....WAR UNENDING......no flu vaccines for the poor.....draft and more charming little tidbits..... Obviously I don't think well of the Arizona Rattlesnake.....

28. Let's see...
Bush pulls off one of the greatest character assasinations in political history...wife is a druggy, fathered a black baby, Hanoi Hilton had clean sheets...and yet he stands up with Bush and proclaims his loyalty. What kind of a man is that?

You must admit he did look pretty uncomfortable though. And deservedly so.

37. Give up on him. Really.

I lost respect for him when he 'forgave' Bush at their convention in 2000 and when he put on that Barbara Streisand hating bit- it wasn't an act- on SNL two years ago (or whenever that was).

He's not Modern. He can't put up with strong women and is queasy about gay people and just doesn't 'get' black or Latino people fully. He's back from those days when the country was de facto ethnically segregated- among whites. There's a lot about his character and tastes and view of the world that simply is 19th century conservative/traditional Irish- tolerant of much, but uncomfortable with it and only capable of it for limited amounts of time. He is certainly no liberal on social matters, though he's not mean enough to be a real reactionary. He's a conservative, but moderate about it in general.

Still, being Irish he is sensitive about the corruptions and abuses of the heavily Anglosaxon Establishment of his Party, especially when used against him. But he can be charmed and assuaged, in a sense bribed or seduced. (That was how he got lured into the dealings that ended up being the S&L scandal.)

To be blunt about moderate Republicans: their defining characteristic is a lack of moral courage. When they find and accept it, they realize their participation in the corruption and become Democrats. That is John McCain's central failing to me: a lack of moral courage. McCain is the most prominent example of a pretty large class of people, certainly not alone. He certainly has physical courage. And he has a bit of moral courage, which we all admire when it appears. But, $%#@ it, he never has quite enough of it to make a difference.

43. It's become pretty apparent to me that McCain
is a whore, plain and simple. He'll say whatever needs to be said to make himself look good. And if he can somehow get the Dems and GOP to think he's a good guy, all the better for him when he wants to run for President. But I'm sorry, any guy who could be smeared by Bush as hard as McCain was and then turn around and publicly support him is either clinically insane or a complete ho. It would be one thing if he just kept his mouth shut for the good of his party but he's actively campaigning for Bush.

Maybe sooner rather than later. He knows now that he will never be President. He's got Puke in his blood and would rather retire to easy street as a faithful Puke elder statesman than a maverick who was "not a team player."

Bush trounced him and now he's groveling back trying to stay safe by staying close. His progressive impulses are outliers. He is showing the side of him that came out in Charles Keating hearings. McCain gave the most for the least bribes. Our guy, Sen. Alan Cranston, D, CA, got $800K to tumble for Mr. Keating. McCain did more than Cranston for just a few free flights to the Caribbean.

50. On the Waterfront
John McCain reminds me of Marlon Brando character......

"You don't understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let's face it."

For those movie buffs here is the set up:

Charley Malloy: Look, kid, I - how much you weigh, son? When you weighed one hundred and sixty-eight pounds you were beautiful. You coulda been another Billy Conn, and that skunk we got you for a manager, he brought you along too fast.

Terry Malloy: It wasn't him, Charley, it was you. Remember that night in the Garden you came down to my dressing room and you said, "Kid, this ain't your night. We're going for the price on Wilson." You remember that? "This ain't your night"! My night! I coulda taken Wilson apart! So what happens? He gets the title shot outdoors on the ballpark and what do I get? A one-way ticket to Palooka-ville! You was my brother, Charley, you shoulda looked out for me a little bit. You shoulda taken care of me just a little bit so I wouldn't have to take them dives for the short-end money.

Charley Malloy: Oh I had some bets down for you. You saw some money.

Terry Malloy: You don't understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let's face it. It was you, Charley.
