Why haven't the Bush comments on minimum wage and immigration been
discussed in more depth? He said if Americans wont take a job for the minimum wage it should be filled by immigrants. How come this isn't hammered home to all workers? This is far worse than taking your overtime pay, now they''ll take your job if you wont work for less.

1. I am wondering that, too
One of the biggest complaints from Boosh's redneck base is how all those illegal Mexicans sneak into this country to take their jobs. I have to wonder how Boosh's plan to give them a work pass to do just that will go over with this group.

2. I totally agree.
Immigration needs to be restricted somewhat, and illegal immigration eliminated. Not for the "racist" reasons that many of you probably would assume, though. Supply and demand works. Slow the flow of immigrants willing to work for 1/10 what an American expects and those people who wished their labor would have to offer a fair wage. A minimum wage law would not even be necessary. If they didn't offer enough, they would have to mow their own yards, pluck their own chickens, and watch their own children.

It's not just at the lower levels of the economy, either. cheaper labor prices affect the pay scale all up and down.

4. The whisper I have heard is that non-Spanish-speakers who
are willing to work for minimum wage in fields like construction or lawn maintenance are not being hired. This also includes nasty manufacturing jobs like meatpacking and chicken processing.

In my opinion, we should not allow immigration when we are struggling mightily to produce jobs for people who are already here legally.

If we cannot provide decent jobs for almost all Americans and cannot show the young that their efforts in education will be rewarded, we will end up with a tremendous social dislocation which in my opinion could result in a revolution, peaceful or otherwise, in which the elites will find themselves in a very unenviable position.

In my mind, the extreme free trade/Ricardo theory of comparative advantage must be repudiated in whole or in part to avoid the complete breakdown of the society in which we live. The costs of such a breakdown obviously either do not occur to the proponents of free trade and Ricardoism or those proponents believe that they will be immune from adverse consequences in their Caribbean Island fortresses.

5. Actually he said less than minimum wage
He said mexicans get fifty cents an hour in Mexico and five dollars here. So why shouldn't they come here for their five dollars. Minimum Wage is five fifteen an hour federal and most states have it much higher.
