until John Kerry takes the oath of office on January 20, 2005. A lot could happen between November 2, 2004 and that date. First of all, don't ever think you're directly electing a president. You're not even directly electing the electors of your state. It's your state's legislature that certifies the slate of electors some time in December, and that's when the president is really and truly elected.
Remember that back in 2000 the Florida legislature was making it crystal clear that they did not care how a recount came out, nor how a Supreme Court decision came out, they were going to certify the Republican slate of electors and that was that.
All it would take is one or two or three states whose legislatures are Republican to overturn the popular vote results in that state. What I don't know, off the top of my head, is which states are like that. I believe Florida is one of those that could have a Democrat (John Kerry wins) popular vote result, and yet the Republican dominated legislature could certify the Republican electors. I'm not sure of any easy way to do the research about which party controls the legislatures in which states. Maybe someone here would know and post those results for us.
